CONTENTS
In all romance fiction, whether a series or a single-title romance, the main plot revolves around two characters that fall in love, face obstacles as they build a relationship together, and, in the end, find happiness.
There are no rules when it comes to creative writing. However, to qualify in the genre as a romance, the story must end optimistically and be emotionally satisfying to the reader.
Other themes can be developed and explored, but the conflict around romantic love and relationship drives the main dramatic action plot line.
The word plot pops up in the definition above: the main plot Plot is the definitive element in the writing of any kind of fiction, yet plot confuses writers than any other aspect of writing. In other words, if plot confuses you, you are not alone.
Through years of perseverance and determination, I pinned down the elusive concept of plot to the point where I could actually see it. Wanting to share what I had learned with other writers, I began teaching plot.
BLOCKBUSTER PLOTS Pure and Simple (BBP the book) came out of that passion. The Blockbuster Plots DVDs and this Romance Writers Plot eBook followed, with more help on the way.
The summer of 2001, I began offering plot workshops and private plot consultations. Since then, I have taught plot to thousands of writers of all genres. A favorite group of mine is romance writers.
Romance Writers Plot eBook is based on the hundreds of plots Ive analyzed and the plot workshops I have led for the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Romance Writers of America.
In workshops and consultations, I have witnessed what happens when writers delve more deeply into the dynamics of cause and effect. If you explore how well constructed characters in conflict act as the driving force behind an exceptional story, you will be better able to create your own exceptional stories. Explore the themes of your own life, and give your projects lasting meaning.
The Romance Writers Plot ebook shows romance writers how to produce superior plots. Romance writers have specific elements to consider when writing romance. This ebook addresses the universal aspects of plot at both the overall story level and at the scene level.
All great stories involve character transformation as a result of inner challenges Character Emotional Development plot line and outer challenges Dramatic Action plot line. The Dramatic Action plot line is often as a consequence of a Character Emotional Development plot line that involves a deep psychological issue. In other words, something within the protagonist herself causes or contributes conflict in the romance.
All great romance novels involve a romantic challenge. In mainstream fiction, romance can be a subplot, buried beneath a Dramatic Action plot driven by something other than pursuit of a relationship and Character Emotional Development plot involving something other than the pursuit of love. However, in ALL great romance novels, the Romantic challenge is at the forefront. The conflict centered around the relationship drives the story.
The truly great stories, be they literary or romance novels, impart some sort of meaning in the end Thematic Significance plot line. When the Romance transforms a Character at depth overtime, the story means something thus Thematic Significance.
The Romance Writers eBook offers concrete tips for creating a compelling romance, complex characters, dramatic action, and thematic details and depth. Add paranormal, erotic, mystery, suspense and historical aspects for more plot lines.
A clearly formulated plot line helps you get going, prevents you from stalling partway through, and guarantees that even those who typically never finish anything will make it to the end.
For the sake of convenience, this ebook gives independent consideration to the romance dramatic action, character emotional development, and thematic significance of a story. To show how to integrate all these aspects and create unity, I offer you the Plot Planner and Scene Tracker plot tools.
Romance Writers Plot eBook is divided into two parts: Plot Planner and Scene Tracker. Both parts are intended as a stepby-step interactive guide for maximizing your scenes and providing depth to your stories. Throughout this book, you are invited to apply the techniques to your own work or, if you have not yet created something, to use the work of a writer you admire. I encourage you to use your own work. Either way, all you really need to proceed is:
A willing heart
A copy of your manuscript or a book that you do not mind marking up
A 6-foot strip of banner paper
A set of markers
A pad of Post-it notes
If your heart is willing but your mind recoils from the sort of methodical, organized approach to the creative process presented in this book, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. One resistant writer kept moaning that she was not an organized person and that these techniques would not work for her. Yet she knew her story needed help. So, she stuck with it. Now, she encourages other resistant writers not to shut out something that might be valuable, but to confront their fears and grow as writers.
Many writers prefer to work things out on the page or are pantser who like to write by the seat of your pants. This is fine. But at the same time, try scanning the ideas in this book. A key element in the nature of creativity is giving yourself time to work things out. When you face your first rewrite, perhaps then you will ready to give the techniques a try.
EXAMPLES
Throughout both parts of the Romance Writers Plot eBook, you are provided examples of how Diana Gabaldons Outlander , Christine Dodds Candle in the Window and Kathryn Dennis Dark Rider successfully accomplished the tasks offered.
I use these examples with the firm belief that the stories came to these authors just as your story comes to you: through a lot of hard work and many rewrites.
The exploration into scene and plot will ensure that with each new rewrite you will give your story a sharper focus and greater depth.
WHAT TO EXPECT
If you are an intuitive writer who likes to find your way on the page, you may find yourself overwhelmed or balking at some of the techniques offered in this ebook. Go ahead and experience the resistance. Then find a way to make the system work for you.
The ideas presented here are left-brained sorts of activities. You likely feel more comfortable on the other side. However, these techniques will support your intuitive side in defining the boundaries in which to create. This process will ultimately help your writing. What I offer here can and should be revised in any way that best serves your writing.
If at any point while you are working on the techniques offered in this ebook you feel inspired to go back to the actual writing of your story, by all means put this book down and do so. The suggestions in this book are merely one means to the end finishing your romance novel.
Remember, the ideas offered are not rules. They are simply loose guidelines that are intended to be bent, ignored, and adapted in whatever way best supports your storytelling.
