Introduction

Enterprises have successfully deployed SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW) to analyze their business data for many years. However, it is not possible to always implement today's requirements with regard to flexibility, real-time capability, and efficient handling of mass data in SAP BW. SAP HANA is a powerful technology that presents efficient solutions for central problems, such as low performance or long runtimes.

SAP BW on SAP HANA

SAP BW, powered by SAP HANA now combines the comprehensive functions of SAP BW with the major speed benefits of SAP HANA. SAP BW on SAP HANA enables you to implement reporting scenarios that have hardly been considered possible until now. For example, it allows high performance reporting based on very detailed mass data without having to compress the data in SAP BW in advance. However, some SAP customers still have reservations about this relatively young technology. Among other things, the focus is on the following questions: Can SAP BW on SAP HANA already be used in production? Is it possible that problems occur because SAP BW on SAP HANA is used? What are the new data modeling options? What are the changes in the administration? How is reporting affected? What must be considered when migrating from SAP BW to SAP BW on SAP HANA? What is the future of SAP BW reporting?

Goal of this Book

This book provides insight into SAP BW on SAP HANA and helps you answer your individual questions. For this purpose, it first explains the basic principles of SAP HANA and describes its technology and architecture. Based on this, it provides information on the steps that are necessary for the implementation and migration of an SAP BW system to SAP BW on SAP HANA. It also shows how the usage of SAP BW on SAP HANA affects data modeling, administration, and reporting.

The current releases of SAP HANA and SAP BW provide interesting innovations, such as new InfoProvider types and the consumption of data models from SAP HANA. Most of these functions, however, can be used only if you migrate your SAP BW system to SAP HANA.

Target Audience

This book is aimed at implementation and process consultants, as well as SAP customers who plan to migrate to SAP BW on SAP HANA and want to acquire detailed knowledge about the various migration options and their implementation. IT and project leads can use this book to correctly categorize the specific elements of an SAP BW on SAP HANA migration. This book is also useful for decision makers who must speak in favor or against an implementation of SAP BW on SAP HANA and therefore should have the corresponding technical knowledge. Finally, this book makes the migration to SAP BW on SAP HANA easier for all SAP BW users and SAP BW administrators and introduces numerous innovations, particularly with regard to modeling and administration.

Structure of the Book

This book is divided into nine chapters. The following summarizes the individual chapters for better orientation:

, Introduction to SAP BW on SAP HANA , introduces SAP BW on SAP HANA and describes the differences between this and other scenarios. It addresses the latest challenges in the data warehouse area and discusses the reasons for an SAP BW on SAP HANA migration. In addition, it deals with the technical principles that lead to the high performance of SAP HANA.
