This latest book by Werner Gitt summarizes the fruit of a lifetime of scholarship in information science. Dr. Gitt's central thesis is profoundthat information is a nonmaterial entity foundational to all life and it can never arise spontaneously from strictly materialistic processes. He provides the most rigorous and useful definition of information thus far formulated, and shows us how to distinguish Universal Information (real information), from things which are often mistakenly called information. Dr. Gitt shows that information only arises from an intelligent sourceand that ultimately all useful information, including biological information, comes from God. This book is a challenging read, but is well worth the effort for all those who wish to understand the ultimate origin and purpose of information.

Dr. John Sanford, Former (and still courtesy) professor, Cornell University, genetic engineering pioneer and inventor of the 'gene gun' (USA).

In this book Professor Werner Gitt gives us all the benefit of years of scholarly and detailed analysis of living systems. He rightly asserts that the only way to understand the essence of the world and all the plants and living creatures is to realize that information is fundamental to their operation and existence. Gitt shows that information is essentially nonmaterial and cannot be defined fundamentally in terms of a materialistic worldview since the basic message transcends code and code transcends matter and energy. Gitt persuasively demonstrates that the biblical worldview is the only way to understand the information-rich world that God created through His Sonthe Logoswho even now sustains all things by the Word (Logos) of His power (Hebrews 1:3). I thoroughly recommend this book to you.

Professor Andy C. McIntosh, DSc, FIMA, C.Math, FEI, C.Eng, FInstP,

MIGEM, FRAeS. University of Leeds (UK).

All life on Earth is characterized by Universal Information (UI), a concept developed in depth in this book by professor Gitt. The properties of UI and a series of empirically verifiable laws are presented. All UI requires coded messages which, when decoded, are able to communicate instructions which guide behavior of the receiving system. Careful analysis reveals that UI is not derived from the properties of matter, but requires an external intelligence. Since all life ever observed requires UI, a powerful and compelling challenge to the dominant materialist worldview has been posed. Professor Gitt offers a strong case that the Bible provides the missing conceptual link as to the Source of UI, and the Bible reveals how we can come to know God, the creator of life.

Without Excuse is a clearly written powerful work that steers people toward a pure approach to science, its relevance, and application. The ramification that informationand its sourceis actually nonmaterial, will be revolutionary to most scientists. Yet, thinking liberated from the reigning, but flawed, decree of materialistic dogma that the universe is solely interactions between mass, energy, space, and timewhich, as Gitt, Compton, and Fernandez show, conflicts exceedingly with the realities of information sciencewill prove vital for biology to go beyond simple descriptive exercises ... fact-packed with much more information than just about information ... refreshingly, readers are challenged to logically consider knowing the original Source of information, the Lord Jesus Christ through His Word of Truththe Bible.

Dr. Randy J. Guliuzza, P.E., M.D. National Representative, Institute for Creation Research, Dallas (USA).

In this book, Werner Gitt defends the bold thesis that there are Scientific Laws of information with radical implications for the way we look at everything from computers to cellular biology. Gitt's carefully reasoned argument will make this a must-read work on information science and its implications for the creation-evolution conflict.

Dr. Lael Weinberger, J.D. Contributing writer, Creation Ministries

International (USA).

Science is driven by the quest for knowledge and understanding. Scientists want to know and convey to others what makes nature 'tick'. Now that the dividing borders between the classical disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology are becoming more permeable and concepts in one discipline can be applied to the others in a truly interdisciplinary fashion, it is obvious that the materialistic world-view is incomplete. Werner Gitt is on a quest to define information as a nonmaterial, but still very real, entity, and he makes an excellent case for its hierarchic levels. Not only that, but Gitt invites the reader to follow him beyond the mere description of this concept of information. Gitt's breakthrough in information science makes it possible not only to answer the question of what makes life 'tick' (its information), but also to answer the more fundamental questions of where we came from, why we are here, and where we will go.

Olaf Karthaus, Prof. Dr. rer. nat., Head of Dept. of Bio- and Material Phonetics. Chitose Institute of Science and Technology Chitose, Hokkaido (Japan).

In this book Dr. Gitt analyzes the concept of information and proposes a definition that is intuitively satisfying, which he calls Universal Information to distinguish it from other definitions such as Shannon Information. He makes an excellent case that Universal Information requires intelligence, and that life contains Universal Information, which means that life required intelligence for its creation. One can, at present, only avoid this conclusion by special pleading. This book is an important one for anyone considering the meaning of life.

Paul Giem, MD. Science-Religion Researcher, California (USA).

Acknowledgments

The time-consuming translation of the 2002 German edition of this book into English was carried out by Harvey Nimmo (BSc (Hons), Physics). His technical knowledge of various disciplines enabled him to help create an excellent and accurate English translation.

It was divine guidance that led me to meet Harvey and Dr. Bob Compton. Bob accompanied me on a long lecture tour through the USA in the fall of2000. He spent much time thinking about the subject-matter of this book. Diverse aspects were discussed with him over the telephone, all leading to a significant extension of the book, which Bob did together with the help of Dr. Jorge Fernandez. It was Bob's suggestion that led us to rename the laws of nature about information as 'Scientific Laws of Universal Information' (SLI). This designation should make clear two aspects: first, just as are the other physical laws, the SLI are laws of nature. Second, a distinction has been made between the material and nonmaterial Scientific Laws. Patty Compton, Bob's wife, did much of the typing. I wish to express my gratitude to those who read the manuscript, offered helpful suggestions and encouragement by writing enthusiastic endorsements. I am thankful to Drs. Jonathan Sarfati and Carl Wieland who expended much effort and time carefully examining the manuscript and making many comments that we incorporated wherever possible. Helen Setterfield and Kym Holwerda edited and polished the final text. I express my heartfelt thanks to all these people who have contributed so diligently to the successful outcome of this present work.
