Preface
The cure for childhood leukemia is a singular event in the history of medicine. Singular because it proves that cancer can be cured, a significant achievement that opens the way to victory over the many other faces of the disease. Singular too because of the way the cure emerged. In our society, it is often only the final result, the bottom line, that captures attention. So let it be told that, with childhood leukemia, there was no such thing as the discovery of a curerather there was the brilliant assembly of a series of small, endlessly persevering steps forward that led to success. This book is about how it happened, who did it, and why they kept on trying.
The history of the cure of childhood leukemia is so recent that we do not need to reconstruct or extrapolate from scattered records. Most of the physicians and scientists who did the major work are still alive. So are many of their patientsthe best testimonial to the success of the endeavor. Their recollections serve as the chief, rich source for telling this story.
