Dedication
This book is dedicated to the memory of my late brother in-law, James Stewart Kaufman, M.D. Throughout his life as a compassionate physician and for over fifty years of my life as his relative by marriage and as his sometime patient, Jim Kaufman was responsible for my care in countless ways. Most important for this book and the rest of my life was Jim's insistance that I continue to look for the reason for the "slight discomfort" that ended with a four-vessel by pass. It was Jim and my sister Joan who interrupted a trip to Russia and spent more than twenty-four hours traveling to be at my bedside just after my surgery. It was Jim who literally held the hands of my small family, offering informa tion as only a family physician could. It was Jim's loving concern for me and my loved ones that brought us all through what turned out to be much more than an un eventful bypass operation. I wish he were still here to see how well I have done. More than that, I wish he were still here for us all to enjoy with him his amazing zest for life.
