Page vii Preface I became acquainted with Sabine Reyes Ulibarr, the author, in 1978. As I read Tierra Amarilla and Mi abuela fumaba puros, I was immediately struck by the musicality and rhythm of his prose, by his subtle humor and his love of New Mexico. Then, in 1980, I became acquainted with Sabine Reyes Ulibarr, the person and the educator, when he accepted my invitation to lecture at East Texas State University (ETSU) and was a guest in my home. I was impressed by his friendly and gentle manner and by his baritone voice, which he used to full advantage as he spoke to a room full of students and faculty members from ETSU and other institutions in the Metroplex (Dallas/Fort Worth) area. His dedication to teaching was evident then as it had been a short time before, when I traveled to New Mexico on a consulting job and visited him at the university. (He was then chair of the department of Modern and Classical Languages.) His commitment to educate New Mexican youth was apparent as I sat in one of his classes and later talked with him in his office. As he said to me during the course of one of our conversations, "I am an educator first, an author second."
