Author's Preface
Less than two hundred years ago, the possibilities of electricity were as little known to mankind as cube root is to a gorilla. Even distinguished scientists knew practically nothing about this "slave" that now lights cities, browns toast, and flings images onto television screens.
In the midst of this ignorance, a wretchedly poor family moved to a London slum in 1791. (This was a year before Kentucky was admitted to the Union). As James and Margaret Faraday unloaded their shabby furniture and carried it into rooms in Surrey, few onlookers paid any attention. The reason was obvious. James Watt had perfected the steam engine; and since this "devilish monster" had put many out of work, the unemployed were migrating like ants into the city on the Thames.
To the nearly one million Londoners, the Faradays were just another family of nearly starved unfortunates. Nevertheless, that same year on a muggy September 22, Michael was born to them. And because of him our electronic age slowly squirmed into being. Indeed, his birth was one of the significant events of that century.
