Author's Preface
I write stories for our grandchildren. Come Christmas I gather what I've written during the year and presto, there's my Christmas gift for them. Then the "accident" happened.
To make sure I had gotten the facts straight, I sent the first draft of the Russian commentary story, which I titled "A Leap of Faith", to Walter Sawatsky. He and I had been intimately involved in the commentary project. Walter responded, but without asking me, sent a copy of his letter to Scottdale saying, "I hope Herald Press publishes it." They, in turn, said, "Where's the story?" So I sent it to them. Then they said, ''That's not enough for a book. Send us some more stories."
Whether by "accident" or Providence, the stories originally written only for our five grandchildren will now be in the hands of many children. Ours gave their permission to share them with other boys and girls. However, it seems to me that they and their parents have a right to know why I write

stories. Here are some of the reasons.
To make our grandchildren happy. Stories are fun. We read some of them aloud and others they read by themselves. By now I know which are their favorites because they ask to hear them again and again.
I also write to inform, to educate. Children want to learn. They're eager to find out things they don't know. For example, very few children under ten have ever thought about smuggling. What exactly does that mean? Is it right or wrong to smuggle? Is it right sometimes but wrong at other times? Is smuggling the same as cheating and lying?
And then I write to motivate, to mold character. I want my stories to be interesting, to be fun, but I don't write only to entertain. I'm concerned about passing on the faith. In one of my Christmas books I made for my grandchildren, I wrote in the foreword that I like to think of myself as a sower: "I sow words and ideas like a sower sows grain... And I also pray for a harvest, like peace and love, justice and compassion...." I wanted our grandchildren to know that, so I was open about it.
The stories in this volume are basically true. Most of them are based on personal experiences. But I've written other stories, like The Great Shalom (also published by Herald Press), for example, which are pure fiction. However, even in the stories of this book some details are fictitious. For example, in "Ouch! That Hurts!" it's true that KM 81 in Paraguay is a Mennonite hospital for people with Hansen's disease (leprosy). I've been there

many times. I checked out the facts with Dr. John Schmidt, the doctor who for many years worked there. I was careful to have the other nonmedical facts straight too. But the conversations between Pedro and the doctor or Pedro and Maria are imagined.
On the other hand, the story about Crete, titled "Here Stood Kandanos" (pronounced KONdonos), is true not only in basic fact but also in my conversations with Bishop Irineos and Klaus Froese.
