"I can't tell you what to do, but if you don't shut up, I'm going to kill you." "That's telling me what to do," Knob whispered back. "It's a mixed signal, that's all I'm saying." Steve bit back a retort. "It's a mixed signal, that's all I'm saying." Steve bit back a retort.
It actually took him biting his lip to keep it from coming out, which hurt and made him want to whimper, but he just winced instead. Maybe if he didn't say anything, Bob wouldn't talk back. "Where is she?" the rotund kid with curly hair whipped his hair back and forth in search of Emma, the third member of their trio. "She's coming," Steve said. "I hope." He muttered the last part under his breath, part prayer, part wishful thinking. Emma was in a store.
Not just any store, a grocery store with all the windows intact. She was hunting for food and it was her bright idea to go in alone five minutes ago to check if the coast was clear. They were hoping to avoid zombies and other survivors, not necessarily in that order, especially after their last encounter with other people who were left after a zombie plague swept the country. He heard a noise on the far side of the building and peeked out from the alley across the street where he and Bob had hidden. "Is that her?" Bob leaned across him for a closer look. "Damn it Knob," Steve cursed as he shoved the other boy off of him. "Damn it Knob," Steve cursed as he shoved the other boy off of him.
Emma pelted around the corner of the grocery store at a fast jog. "Run," she said as she hurried past them. Steve pushed and flailed against Bob as a quartet of walking dead shambled around from the back of the building and shuffled toward them. They weren't fast, but they were relentless. Steve hopped up and took a couple of steps after Emma. "Damn it!" he cursed again and turned around.
He yanked Bob up off the ground and pushed him into a run as they followed the girl. The Dead couldn't keep pace, but they didn't have to. They would just keep coming until the three of them found a place to hide, or something else distracted them. CHAPTER TWO Im starving, Bob said again. They had lost the small horde of walking dead that shambled after them. It was a simple matter of turning a corner and getting out of sight.
The zombies were attracted by noise and movement and so long as they were quiet and didnt move, the rotting walkers kept going past until the coast was clear. We know, Emma snapped. Guess youre hungry too, Bob sulked. Were all hungry Knob, Steve sighed. Lets just get back to the truck and see what we can find. No gas. No food. Nothing. Nothing.
They trudged along in silence for a few moments through the empty street on high alert, or at least as alert as they could be. Bob hoped the growling of his stomach wouldnt draw the zombies back. He was about to say it, but decided not to. No need to remind them of what he just reminded them of. They might leave him. He watched the two others walk slightly ahead and apart from him.
Steve was a jock who used to torture him at school. Emma was the smart girl who ran the school paper. And Bob? He was smart, and funny and charming, at least according to his mother. He liked to play games and was into a bunch of different things, but he was neither popular nor much well liked outside of his small circle of friends. Dead friends, he reminded himself and wondered if any of the zombies they had seen were them. Or his mom.
A tear leaked from the corner of his eye and dripped down his cheek before he could wipe it away. He sniffed behind his arm, and tried to keep it quiet. Steve glanced over his shoulder and dropped back two steps next to him. Youre just hungry, Knob. I know, Bob sobbed. I just said that.
Steve put his arm across his shoulders and hustled him up further. Yeah, but your blood sugar is low and this place is pretty depressing on a normal day. Throw in the end of the world and it can make your brain act a little crazy. Its gonna be okay, Emma called back. Was there anything in the store? he wiped away the sniffles as Steve pulled his arm off his shoulders. I didnt see, she said.
Screw the car, Bob said. Lets go back and check. Emma stopped. There were a lot of Z in there, she said. I just got a few that were outside of the door. What were they doing? She shrugged.
I didnt stay to ask. We should at least check it out, he said. We might find something. Steve glanced at Emma and nodded his head. She raised her eyebrows in question. Yeah, we should go see if we can find anything.
I could kill for some Ramen noodles. Bobs stomach rumbled in agreement. It wasnt worth a laugh, but the trio smiled and turned their steps toward the direction of the only store in town. CHAPTER Calling it a town was being generous. It was a wide spot in the road with buildings on both sides, and a few blocks that ran behind the main street. Trash, litter, leaves and debris littered the sidewalk and asphalt.
Maybe we go in the front this time? Steve asked as the three of them crept up the side of the road. Blocked, Emma said. There were shopping carts and metal racks piled in front of the double glass doors. Moving them would make too much noise. Emma held them up at the corner of the building and peeked around. Clear, she said and led them forward.
They circled around to the back of the building with a small parking lot for eight to ten cars, if they parked tight. There were no lines on the blacktop, just a patch of crumbled space that the weeds were already starting to reclaim. They were there, she pointed. A metal back door was in the middle of the building under a bent and dented awning that flapped in the small breeze. Think thats what they were looking at? Bob wondered. Maybe, Steve answered.
It was movement, and noise if they listened close, but he wasnt sure if it was enough to keep them occupied. At least not for long. When he thought that, he wondered how long before they started showing up again now that they werent distracted by the three of them running. We better hurry, he said. He took the lead and hustled up to the door with his back to the building. Careful, Emma told him.
