Fitzgeralds Craft of Short Fiction offers the first comprehensive study of the four collections of short stories that F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) prepared for publication during his lifetime: Flappers and Philosophers (1920), Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), All the Sad Young Men (1926), and Taps at Reveille (1935). These authorized collectionswhich include works from the entire range of Fitzgeralds career, from his undergraduate days at Princeton to his final contributions to Esquire magazineprovide an ideal overview of his development as a short story writer. Originally published in 1989, this volume draws upon Fitzgeralds copious personal correspondence, biographical studies, and all available criticism, and analyzes how Fitzgerald perceived his achievements as a writer of short fiction from both artistic and commercial standpoints. Petry pays close attention to the individual stories, exploring how Fitzgeralds growing technical expertise and the evolution of his themes reflect changes in his personal life.

I am also deeply grateful to the Rhode Island School of Designand in particular to Paul Nash, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and to Edward Dwyer, Chairman of the Liberal Arts Divisionfor arranging for me to have a full-year sabbatical leave in conjunction with my grant.
For their help in obtaining the necessary books, articles, and reviews, I wish to thank the Rockefeller Library of Brown University, the Providence Public Library, the Providence College Library, the Rhode Island College Library, and the Providence Athenaeum. I also thank Edgar A. Dryden, Editor of Arizona Quarterly, for permission to reprint (in slightly modified form) my 1983 essay on Fitzgerald's story "The Jelly-Bean."
I am especially grateful to four scholars who have been unstinting in their support of my work: George Monteiro of Brown University; Alan Gribben of the University of Texas; Jackson R. Bryer of the University of Maryland; and Milton R. Stern of the University of Connecticut. Their help, advice, and friendship have made all the difference.
Finally, I wish to thank the staff of the UMI Research Press, and in particular Christine B. Hammes, Barbara K. Timmons, Brad Taylor, Marilyn Meeker, and Louise Washburne; and the staff of The University of Alabama Press, especially Malcolm M. MacDonald and Nicole Mitchell.
