Biographical Introduction
Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones on January 24, 1862, in New York City. Her family on both sides was established New York business aristocracy; her ancestry was of the best English and Dutch strains, and her favorite grandfather, Ebenezer Stevens, had been a general in the Revolutionary War. Edith Jones grew up in a brownstone mansion on West Twenty-third Street in New York. She accompanied her parents and two older brothers on trips to the country and to Europe, and from the beginning of her life she was immersed in a society noted for its manners, taste, snobbishness, and cultural vacuity. Edith Wharton reacted against this society by portraying its weaknesses in many of her novels, but from the society she absorbed strengths that made her writing powerful.
