Foreword and Acknowledgements
The diaries of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn are only parts of the remarkable archives which these two unusual men left to posterity. Both have provided us, through their diaries, papers, and correspondence, with unequalled images of the second half of the seventeenth century and, in particular, the reigns of Charles II and James II. That the two were friends as well, and remained so until Pepys's death in 1703, is a piece of remarkable fortune for it means we are in a position to compare their descriptions of personalities, places, events, and of course each other.
Various selections from the correspondence of both men have been published in the past. These have included many of the letters which were exchanged by the two, the largest proportion of all the very extensive correspondence which they engaged in. However, it has never before been possible to collate the various manuscript versions of the letters which include letters-sent, loose drafts, and copies kept in bound letter-books; in addition, a number of letters remained unpublished. With the arrival of the Evelyn archive at the British Library in 1995 it has become possible to attempt to compile a complete collection of all the letters which passed between them. In so doing the ways in which Pepys and Evelyn managed their correspondence has become clearer.
It has only been since 1955 (for Evelyn) and 1971 (for Pepys) that definitive editions of the diaries have been available. Pepys's diary of course takes us no farther than the end of May 1669, while Evelyn's has many shortcomings with respect to detail and completeness. Their correspondence fills many of the gaps, as well as expanding on events or exchanges which are described in the diaries. For this edition of the correspondence, all of Pepys's dispersed archives have been consulted, as well as Evelyn's complex and confusing records. A number of other letters in private collections or dispersed individually amongst libraries, many in the United States, have been located and transcribed.
