"To love nature is to liveto live beyond the uncertain happiness bestowed by the trials and tribulations of man; to live in observation of the great mechanism that somehow pervades every form of life. Man is but one in a tremendous ensemble."
The Wasatch range is a steep-fronted set of mountains that form the north-south backbone of Utah. Rising from the remnants of an ancient sea floor now four thousand feet in elevation to ridges and peaks as high as twelve thousand feet, the range stretches for 150 miles from Logan Canyon at the top of the state to Payson Canyon in the south.
Those of us who live along the Wasatch Front have all had our personal experiences and memories of these mountains. A growing number of us document them in journals, diaries, or mileage logs. What was for a period of time considered a quaint habit, maintaining detailed travel records, has thankfully come into fashion againthough records may now be computer input or even videography. Records of our thoughts and observations will continue to be a treasure for future generations. Such are the writings of Utah naturalist Claude T. Barnes. The opportunity to experience the Wasatch Mountains as they once were is preserved in his diaries, journals, scientific collections, and photographs.
From the early 1920s to the late 1950s, Barnes ventured forth as often as he could from his "home on the foothills just four hundred yards east of the mouth of City Creek Canyon" (359 10th Avenue) into the "declivities" of the Wasatch. He felt that his home was ideally and centrally located for

trips into the canyons along the length of the Wasatch. Being an avid bird watcher, Barnes and his associates also recorded many hours of observations at Farmington Bay on the Great Salt Lake.
In the early years Mr. Barnes walked or rode horseback into the Wasatch. In later years, as canyon roads improved, he drove his automobile. Most early excursions were made alone to collect birds and mammals. Later, he concentrated on observing of animal habits and habitats, making extensive documentary collections of plants and insects. Barnes was accompanied by noteworthy naturalists and botanists of the day, such as the astute Louise Atkinson and the peculiar Marcus E. Jones, who had collected and described most of the herbaceous plants of the Wasatch Mountains around the turn of the century.
