Chapter One
Brooklynn Armstrong grabbeda throw pillow from the sofa as she made her way toward the window, squeezing the pillow with everything she had. Her anger bloomedfurther, stealing her breath and making her body shake withrage. A fucking psych evaluation.Really?
If only shed kept hermouth shut, she wouldnt be in this position. After seven monthspartnered with Officer Donovick, she found out she couldnt trusthim to look out for her. Everything fellapart after he denied seeing what shed witnessed, when he turnedhis back on her and left her looking unstable.
How could he lie about what theydseen? The man was dangerous and it was their job to protect thecitizens from She didnt know what to call the suspect. He wasnthuman if he could shapeshift into an animal. But how was that evenpossible?
Each morning she picked upher badge and strapped on her weapon to keep the citizens of thiscity safe. With things like him running around the streets, they were in danger. Allher life she wanted to follow in her fathers footsteps and be apolice officer. Now everything she worked for was slipping from hergrasp and she didnt know how to stop it.
The dingy alley filled hervison and the stench from the garbage drifted toward her until herstomach churned in protest. Adrenaline pumped through her veins. Ina dead-end alley there were a few ways this could end and only oneof them was peacefulhis surrender.
Stop. Donovick stood ather left, his gun drawn and aimed at the back of thesuspect.
Realizing he made a wrongturn, leaving him no place to go, he spun around to face themagain. Im not going back. Were the samehow can you do this? Youknow if they find out theyll kill me. His gaze was on Donovick,as if he wasnt even seeing her.
Confused, she wanted toglance toward her partner, to see if this made sense to him, or ifthe suspect was just drugged up and spouting nonsense. Instead, shetook that as the opportunity and stepped farther out of his directeyesight. She eased in closer, keeping her movements to a minimal,so as not to draw his attention, and replaced her drawn gun withthe non-lethal electroshock weapon. If shecould get within fifteen feet of him, she could bring him down andgive them the opportunity to arrest him before the situation gotany further out of control.
Dont. Donovicks wordsechoed off the buildings, only to be followed by agrowl.
Material ripped and shredsof clothing flew through the air. The man before her
What the fuck? Her eyeswidened and her jaw went slack. Her brain refused to process whathad happened, as if that would change the fact that where a manstood a moment before there was now a fucking lion! There was noway this was happening. She had to be dead or unconscious. Shedropped the non-lethal weapon in her hand, sending it crashing tothe ground. Once again pulled her gun from the holster, but shecouldnt aim quickly enough before he pounced.
There was no time to react,no time to scream, as the lion launched itself toward her. Shestumbled backward, trying to get away, but she was no match for theanimals speed. She flew through the air until her back slammedagainst the side of the building and her head cracked against thebricks. Fighting to stay conscious, she didnt think about whatwould happen to her if she let the darkness close in around her.Images of Donovick, his wife, and their three-year-old son filledher mind. She had to do something.
Just go. Get out of thecitybefore someone else stumbles on you, someone who isnt one ofus. Donovick holstered his gun, his gaze still firmly on the lion. But did you have to do that? He nodded in her direction. How amI going to explain her condition and what she saw?
She slammed her fist intothe pillow over and over. One ofus. What had Donovick meant? Why had helet their suspect go? Was Donovick one of them too? Could he changeinto an animal? Her thoughts were jumbled with questions. Thenausea from her concussion rose within her, only serving to angerher more.
Damn you, Donovick! They took mybadge. The first tear of loss rolled out of the corner of her eye.Maybe it wasnt permanent. There was still a chance she could gether badge back, but it seemed too small for her to hold out hope.Even if she did, she couldnt stay in Pittsburgh. The news of whatshed seen traveled throughout the department. Cops liked togossip. When it was about one of their own, it was even juicer. Noone there would ever trust her as their partner again. Shed haveto leave, and after she was cleared, with a little luck shed findsome other police department to hire her. Maybe then she could burythis whole thing and pretend it never happened.
She gazed at the side ofMount Washington, watching an incline carry tourists up to theobservation deck that would give them a panoramic view of DowntownPittsburgh. Staring out at the lights of the city, her anger mixedwith grief. This incident could cost her a lot more than just herbadge. What was she supposed to do with her life if she couldnt bea cop? She wasnt sure what she was moreupset about: losing the career she had worked so hard to gain orbeing forced to leave the city she had fallen in love with. Threeyears as a police officertwo with another department, beforeaccepting her current positionbut only a year in the city and bothlosses seemed equally devastating.
