Chapter 1

Move it asshole, Kalen growled outas he jerked the perp along the walkway.

Easy Kalen, we dont want to drawtoo much attention. The authority is waiting for us at the penalspaceport. Well drop him off and head back home. Elsa was just asantsy to get rid of the current perp as Kalen. She needed a goodvacation, maybe she would go home to Bazin for a visit.

Ill be relieved to get rid ofthis one. He ruined my best business suit.

Elsa rolled her eyes at Kalen. Hewas always dressed immaculately, not a hair out of place. He wasfrom Tsairis, a cold planet where the people lived in domes andwere known to be reserved and extremely logical people. Seeing himin his business attire, no one ever guess he was a bountyhunter.

Most people didnt guess that Elsawas a bounty hunter either. Rather than wear business suits likeKalen, she went in the opposite direction preferring leather andform fitting material. She kept her long blond hair pulled backinto a tight ponytail and sometimes wore contacts to dull down thebrightness of her blue eyes. She knew the overall effect came offlike a dominatrix, but she loved it, loved how it made her feelstrong and powerful. Whenever she and Kalen worked together, peoplewould stare and whisper about them. She could imagine what theythought. She knew how men reacted to her appearance and she enjoyedusing that to her advantage, keeping them off guard.

Ill be glad to be rid of the twoof you! You bicker like an old married couple. Their perpcommented drawing glares from both Elsa and Kalen.

Shut up or Ill make you shut up,Elsa said, smiling sweetly. It was the dangerous look in her eyesthat made him remain quiet.

They walked down the pathway intothe spaceport toward the elevator. The penal facility was on thelower level. Once they reached the correct level, they had to gothrough a series of security checks, all standard. But then one ofthe security people asked them to stay while they took the perp tolock up.

Why would they need us to stay?Elsa asked.

Im not sure butit does seem odd. Keep your eyes open. Kalen made a casual circuit of the room, alert for anythingsuspicious.

Two female officers passed by andmade no secret of checking Kalen out. Having grown prideful awayfrom his home planet and not particularly bothered by it, Kalenresponded with a smile and nod, saying, Good day, ladies. Thewomen giggled and walked off whispering to eachother .

Elsa rolled her eyes. Do you have to flirtwith every woman you meet?

I was merely beingpolite.

Right.

My question to you is why do youcare?

Im your partner and were on theclock. You need to keep you mind and your hands on themission.

He glared at her, the first realemotion he had shown since they left for their mission. I amalways a professional. You dont need to tell me how to do myjob.

Yet, you alwaystell everyone else how they are supposed to do their job, sheresponded back. For some reason, Kalen got on her nerves more thanany other bounty hunter shed had to work with. She respected him and admired his work ethic, sure. But he was also too much like her. It should have made himperfect to work with, but she had definitely not found that to bethe case. The best that could be said was they tolerated each otherand got the job done. Vic probably put them together because theywere so similar. But, despite having different preferences for whoshe worked with, she had to admit she trusted him with her life andknew he would be there for her if she needed him to be. He wasstrong and dependable, but annoying because he thought he wasalways right

Sorry Kalen, Im just feeling alittle testy. I want this mission to be over so that we can gohome. I need some relaxation; Ive been working toohard.

Well, lets see what they want fromus so that we can get out of here, he commented looking atsomething behind her.

She turned and saw a man headingtheir way. He clearly recognized her, though she was certain theydnever met before, so she assumed he was probably the reason theauthority officer had told them to wait. The man approached andoffered his hand, revealing his unfamiliarity with bountyhunters. .

Hello, Im StewartVanderholt.

Neither of them shook his hand. Honestly, itwas as if hed never heard of contact poisons before. He loweredhis hand and shuffled his feet nervously, obviously thrown off hisstride.

Kalen looked at him expressionlessly. What doyou want Mr. Vanderholt?

Im a General Planetary Attorneyfor New Earth. There is a murder suspect that has disappeared. Iwanted to hire you to find him and bring him in forquestioning.

Elsa frowned, Why isnt this request comingthrough the authority?

The man in question does not havea warrant out for him yet and the authority can only do so muchwithout a warrant.

Kalen grunted in acknowledgement. And webounty hunters are not so hampered by such things aswarrants.

The lawyer smiled widely.Exactly.

How did you know we were going tobe here? Elsa asked suspiciously.

I called the authority today totry to get them to do something and they suggested that I use abounty hunter agency. There arent any agencies based here, though.I asked if they knew of any bounty hunters off planet and they saidthat a couple of bounty hunters were bringing in a perp in forprocessing today. I asked that they have you wait for me and let meknow immediately of your arrival and to ask you to wait forme.

Why would the authority do this foryou? Kalen sounded just as suspicious of the lawyer as Elsawas.

I have a few friends in theauthority. They owe me favors.

Elsa looked at Kalen. He didnt believe theguy was telling them the complete truth either. We cant take onextra jobs without approval from our boss, she said.

Call him. Im willing to doubleyour normal fee.

Who exactly is this person youwant us to find and who is he supposed to have killed? Elsa askedwhile Kalen pulled out his phone to call their bosses Vic andJagger Desantos.

The lawyer pulled out a folder fromthe briefcase he had been carrying and handed it to her. His nameis Felix Roberts. He is wanted for questioning in the murder of hiswife Bridgette Roberts. Ive included photos and a brief bio onhim.

She didn't bother opening thefolder. If Vic and Jagger called them back home there was no needto get any further involved. Turning to wait for Kalen to finishthe call she could feel the nervousness radiating from the lawyer. He was ringing his hands and sweating profusely. He looked aroundalmost in fear of something. There was definitely something offwith this situation. She focused back on Kalen and caught the endof the conversation.

I understand. Yes, well becareful and check in. Ill tell him. Kalen ended the call andignored the lawyer entirely as he addressed Elsa. He said that itwas up to us on whether we want to take another job or to headback. Im fine with taking on another job. What do you want to doElsa?
