Introduction
Elisha Stockwell, Jr., was born June 28, 1846, at Athol, Massachusetts. When he was three years of age, his parents moved to Beloit, Wisconsin, and a few years later to Alma, Jackson County, Wisconsin. It was here that Elisha, Jr., spent the rest of his childhood and youth until, at the age of fifteen years, he answered President Lincoln's call for volunteers and enlisted in Company I, Fourteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, February 25, 1862. He was mustered in at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, left for the front with his company on March 8, 186, and participated in his first battle, the Battle of Shiloh, April 7,1862. He received two wounds in this battle, the only injuries which he suffered during the war. He was promoted to corporal March 1, 1865, and was mustered out October 9, 1865, at the end of the war.
While in Wisconsin on furlough, he was married to Miss Katherine Hurley of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, March 14, 1864. After the war they made their home near Alma, Wisconsin, until 1872, when they moved by ox team to Otter Tail County, Minnesota. There they claimed a homestead and built their cabin on the shore of Lake Lizzie, where the town of Dunvilla now stands. After four years, they moved back to Wisconsin
