Foreword
Entrepreneurship has enabled Broadway to excel in the productions of musicals as well as plays. To the admiration of the whole world the long run musical became an American phenomenon. Today; from Tokyo to Pariseven on occasion Moscowproducers in these world capitals follow Broadway openings, the critic's assessments of these shows, as well as noting accolades earned as symbolized by the Tony Awards.
At the tender ages of 31 and 27 respectively Kenneth Waissman and Maxine Fox proved to be successful theatre entrepreneurs. Their musical phenomenon GREASE, until quite recently, enjoyed the record of the longest running Broadway show (play or musical) in history. Ironically; a Broadway producer had suggested they keep GREASE at the Eden Theatre downtown on Second Avenue. It's another dimension of entrepreneurship to listen to another Broadway producer's advice, but then go ahead and make an independent decision. Had they kept GREASE downtown, they may not have ever surpassed an all-time record-breaking run of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.
A year after GREASE opened, composers Richard and Robert Sherman approached Ken and Maxine with an idea for a Big Band, World War II home front musical. The Waissmans were excited by the Sherman Brothers' idea and the result was the musical OVER HERE!, which brought back to public awareness the Andrews Sisters. In some respects OVER HERE! demonstrated more dramatically and vividly a special kind of entrepreneurship. From little more than an idea, Ken and Maxine, with their colleagues in the theatre developed a major theatre event. Much water had gone over the dam since the end of World War II, but they daringly showed that nostalgia brilliantly produced could not only win over the critics but could fill a Broadway theatre.
