Waitavala Water Slide

S urf down on your feet or slide down on your bottom. Whichever you choose, youll whizz through the beautiful rainforest with surprising speed when you take a ride on the

Waitavala Water Slide. Formed

forces, this fierce, slip-
pery slope takes you
down a chute along
smooth rock formations
in the jungles of Fiji.
Your favourite water
parks got nothing
on this thrill ride.

Tonga

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai

T his tiny slice of land has the honour of being the worlds youngest island. It lived as a quiet, underground volcano until 2015, when it burst out of the Pacific Ocean. The ash plumes from its eruption were so vast they diverted flights for days. When it settled down, it formed a seahorse-shaped island with a milky-green lake in the colour of its crater. Alas, this baby island may only have
a short life. Scientists
believe that its too frag-
ile to survive more than
a few decades. It wont
be long before it erodes
back into the ocean
to resume its quiet,
underwater life.

National

Monument & Preserve

M ore people explore space each year than visit the otherworldly Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve. A collapsed volcanic crater, this barren landscape feels more than a little like a lost world. Giant bears wander across the tundra. Clouds fill up the crater and spill over the edges like waterfalls. Only the most intrepid explorers hike down into the crater using animal trails, before whitewater rafting down the Aniakchak River out to Aniakchak Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Haiku Stairs

ITS A STAIRWAY TO nowhere, but at the top of these 3,922 steps, youll think youve reached heaven. The stairway once led to a top-secret radio facility in the 1940s, but after the radio base was shut down, the stairs remained. Although youre not supposed to climb these stairs, that doesnt stop risk-takers from hiking up for a spectacular view from the top of the Koolau Mountain Range. Paradise, indeed!
