Because they are passed down orally, African myths adapt and change, with each commu- nity adding its own twist. The stories often involve animals who talk and think like people, explanations for how the world began, and moral lessons. Here are four age-old myths from this vast continent....

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

T he great and powerful Mbombo sat alone in the middle of the vast, dark Earth. Ancient black waters rushed around his human-like form. Mbombo felt very ill. In fact, he had been feeling ill for millions of years, due to loneliness. He felt this sad solitude in the pit of his stomach, and the sickening feeling had intensified over eons until it became painful. Mbombos belly had also grown bigger and bigger, until finally he vomited.

From deep within Mbombos belly came the sun, which rose into the sky and scattered light everywhere. Next he vomited the moon, stars, and all the other planets. Then the bright, hot sun evaporated some of the ancient water on Earth, creating clouds which then, in turn, rained back down on the land. In time, hills emerged from the water like enormous, dry waves.

But Mbombo was not finished; he still felt very ill. It was a wrenching, rolling, terrible pain. Just as Mbombo

Just as Mbombo

thought hed get no relief, he vomited once more, bringing nine animals into existence: THE L EOPARD, called Koy Bumba; THE E AGLE, Ponga Bumba; THE C ROCODILE, Ganda Bumba; THE F ISH, Yo Bumba; THE T ORTOISE, Kono Bumba; THE SWIFT, BLACK L EOPARD-LIKE C REATURE MADE OF L IGHTNING, Tsetse Bumba; THE WHITE H ERON, Nyanyi Bumba; THE S CARAB B EETLE with no name; and THE G OAT named Budi.

And yet, Mbombo still felt he had to vomit more. Flowing out of his wide mouth came many men and many women to keep him company on Earth. Now, thats what he had needed! Mbombo felt a lot better, and his stomach was calm and pleasant again.

Now Mbombo was able to sit back and relax, as his creations began forming all the rest of the worlds creatures. The jewel-colored scarab beetle went on to make all the other insects in the world, countless numbers of them. The graceful white heron, Nyanyi Bumba, bowed its long beak and created all the birds to grace the skyall but one: the kite. The toothy crocodile, Ganda Bumba, called into being all the scaly creatures, like snakes and lizards, to slither across the Earth. Yo Bumba, the fish, populated the seas with tens of thousands of other fish. Lastly, Budi, the sturdy-footed goat, created all the horned animals to roam the land.
