Encyclopedia of Western Gunfighters: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Encyclopedia of Western Gunfighters" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Much information (some of it factual, a lot of it fictional) is available about the famous gunfighters of the Old Westthe Jameses, Billy the Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, John Wesley Hardin, and that latter-day folk idol, Butch Cassidy. Dozens of less-well-known but sometimes even more murderous gunslingerssuch men as Cullen Baker, Harvey Logan, Longhaired Jim Courtright, and Mysterious Dave Matherhave received only scant mention in scattered accounts. This encyclopediaa whos who of the gunfighting West-provides a compilation of facts, sifted myths, folklore, and outright lies, about the lives and deaths of 255 men, both the famous and the all but forgotten. Also included are detailed accounts of the almost six hundred gunfights the men took part in, mostly between the end of the Civil War and the turn of the century. Each entry follows a concise and useful format: an alphabetical listing of the gunman; nicknames or aliases; dates and places of birth and death, is known; the occupations the man pursued; a brief biography; and, in chronological order, accounts of the verified gunfights in which he participated. In the Introduction, from the information he amassed in this volume, Bill ONeal provides a fascinating summary of the data and offers new insights into the nature of the western gunmen and of the feuds and fights that bloodied the West. For example, he relates how a large number of the gunfighters used guns as tools of their trades, legitimate and otherwiselawmen and detectives, buffalo hunters, army scouts, thieves, hired killers, and the like. Of the gunfighters included here 108 served as law officers at some time in their careers. The average lifespan, including those who died of natural causes, was forty-seven years, and more than 50 percent of the gunmen died from gunshot wounds.Encyclopedia of Western Gunfighters offers a unique compilation of information about these mena comprehensive and reliable source.

For three hundred dollars Id cut anybody in two with a sawed-off shotgun - photo 5
For three hundred dollars I'd cut anybody in two with a sawed-off shotgun.
Mannen Clements
In spite of the violence and outlawry through which I have lived, I firmly believe that an understanding Providence has watched over me. No matter how close the call has been, when I have looked to a higher power for assistance, it has never failed me. I will go further and say that at times, when it seemed that I could not avoid killing a man, some unseen power has intervened at the crucial moment.... It is true that I wounded one or two, and received two wounds in return, but I have never taken a human life.
George Coe
I, at no time, contemplated taking any chances [with Billy the Kid] which I could avoid with caution or cunning. The only circumstances under which we could have met on equal terms, would have been accidental, and to which I would have been an unwilling party.
Pat Garrett
The most important lesson I learned... was that the winner of a gunplay usually was the one who took his time. The second was that, if I hoped to live on the frontier, I would shun flashy trick-shootinggrandstand playas I would poison.... In all my life as a frontier peace officer, I did not know a really proficient gunfighter who had anything but contempt for the gun-fanner, or the man who literally shot from the hip.
Wyatt Earp

Never try to run a bluff with a six-gun Many a man has been buried with his - photo 6
Never try to run a bluff with a six-gun. Many a man has been buried with his boots on because he foolishly tried to scare someone by reaching for his hardware. Always remember that a six-shooter is made to kill the other fellow with and for no other reason on earth.... If you have to stop a man with a gun, grab the stock of your six-shooter with a death-grip that won't let it wobble, and try to hit him just where the belt buckle would be. That's the broadest target from head to heel.
Bat Masterson
I have been asked many times how my wife could stand being married to anyone who was shot at so often. I don't know that myself. I don't know how she ever lived through it.
Dee Harkey
As to killing, I never think much about it. I don't believe in ghosts, and I don't keep the lights burning all night to keep them away. That's because I'm not a murderer. It is the other man or me in a fight, and I don't stop to thinkis it a sin to do this thing? And after it is over, what's the use of disturbing the mind?
Wild Bill Hickok
I don't believe the bullet was ever molded that will kill me.
Dallas Stoudenmire
[He was wrong.]
My first step was disobedience; next whisky drinking; next carrying pistols; next gambling, and then murder, and I suppose next will be the gallows.
Bill Longley

Acknowledgments
My first debt in compiling this volume is owed to the numerous authors who have produced biographical books or articles about western gunfighters. A great amount of material has been written concerning individuals included in this study, and much of this material has proved to be a rich source of reliable information.
Dr. Ralph Goodwin, professor of history at East Texas State University in Commerce, directed my master's thesis, thereby introducing me to the possibilities and techniques of historical research through the accumulation and evaluation of biographical information.
Joyce Chapman, librarian at Panola Junior College, was unfailingly cooperative and resourceful in procuring needed books and miscellaneous material. Nyle H. Miller and Joseph W. Snell were responsible for a highly informative session at the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka. Also helpful were several members of the staffs of the Main Library at the University of Texas in Austin, of the Dallas Public Library, and of the Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
