NOTE ON SPELLINGS

The towns and villages of Kunar and Nuristan have names that come from many languages: from Pashto, from Dari, and from Nuristani and Pashai languages that have no written form and in some cases are extinct. English transliterations vary. The name can be transliterated as Pech or Pich while pronounced Want has often been - photo 4 can be transliterated as Pech or Pich, while pronounced Want has often been distorted into the two-syllable Wanat through - photo 5 , pronounced Want, has often been distorted into the two-syllable Wanat through a game of telephone involving Russian and American military map transliterations.

I HAVE TRIED to adopt spellings that are as close as possible to the way residents of the places pronounce the names without being unfamiliar to American veterans who served there, while preserving alternate spellings in quotations from Americans and from U.S. military documents. For places that have multiple names, I have used the name most familiar to the U.S. military (usually the Pashto one).
