For some time there has existed a need for a new account of the life and stylistic development of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). This need is made all the more obvious by the fact that Adolf Rosenberg's book, written in 1898, remains a most complete study of Teniers. Some are incomplete; others contain errors gleaned from earlier sources. None has dealt with the artist's stylistic evolution from his early works to the works of the mature Teniers.
This study seeks to present a more complete biography of Teniers along with a detailed analysis of his style in various periods of his career. The book discusses the artists who influenced Teniers and, in turn, those he influenced. It also contains material about the painters with whom Teniers collaborated. Finally, consideration is given to Teniers as a graphic artist and to his impact on the graphic arts. The study provides a basis for Teniers's connoisseurship that will facilitate the difficult problem of dating the large number of his undated works. It may also shed some light on the problems of sorting out the many followers and imitators of Teniers.
It has not been my intention to prepare a catalogue raisonn. I am aware that this may prove disappointing to some who seek an analysis of several thousand boring genres and landscapes. I attempt here to establish new, accurate criteria for the recognition of Teniers's paintings and for the artist's stylistic evolution. It does not seem right to place Teniers in the mold of an artist such as Van Dyck, always the prodigy. There is a definite evolutionary sequence in Teniers's paintings and this sequence is my primary consideration. I could see no reason to bore the reader with endlessly repetitive peasant genres.
Jane P. Davidson
I am indebted to a great many people for their assistance in the preparation of this study. First of all, I must thank Erik Larsen, who first suggested that I study Teniers and who has continued to be interested in my research over the years.
I would also like to thank the staffs of several research institutions for their help with details of Teniers's life and with documentation of various paintings. The staffs of the Archives g&les du royaume, Brussels, and the Archives de la Ville de Bruxelles come to mind, as does the staff of the Stadsarchief, Antwerp. The staff of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, the Institut royal du patrimoine artistique, and the Zentral Institut fi Kunstgeschichte were also most helpful. I especially thank Dr. Ulla Krempel of the Direktion der Bayerischen Staatsgemaldesammlungen, who on several occasions shared her expertise and helped me obtain information on paintings in the Alte Pinakothek and the Schleissheim collections.
