Editors Foreword A Question of Balance by David Marcum S herlock Holmes - photo 3

Editors Foreword: A Question of Balance

by David Marcum

S herlock Holmes was a scientist and an intellectual. Despite tweaking Watson in the early days of their friendship by giving the impression that he would do his best to forget such things as the earth going around the sun because it wouldnt make a pennyworth of difference to him or his work, he was not a fool. Of course Holmes needed to understand Copernican Theory for such would be necessary to take the measure of a foe who once wrote The Dynamics of an Asteroid.

As a scientist, Holmes would be familiar with Newtons Third Law of Motion: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction . For every expression of energy in one direction, there is an equal push back. This is why you can walk the force you expend pushing against the earth is equally pushed back ty the earth against you.

But the idea of an equal and opposite reaction has relevance beyond cold science. There are philosophical implications as well. Ancient Chinese philosophy tells of yin (dark) and yang (light), wherein opposite or contrary forces are bound together, constantly pushing or pulling one another with equal and opposite reactions opposing forces that constantly strive to be in perfect balance.
