WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange entered Sweden for the third time in 2010 on Wednesday 11 August. He was to give a talk for the Brotherhood Movement of Swedens Social Democratic party, but he had other things in mind as well.
The Afghan War Diaries
Assange felt the heat and thought it safest to leave the UK for a while.
Julian also wanted to get publishing rights in Sweden, a country known for its extreme protection of journalistic sources. Publishing rights are only available to Swedish citizens and permanent residents, so Julian planned to apply for residence as well.
Anna Ardin, secretary of the Brotherhood Movement back then, organised Julians visit.
Anna then turned over arrangements to freelance reporter and photographer Donald Bostrm. was to arrange for Julians accommodations starting on that same day.
But Anna returned home a day too earlyFriday 13 August.
Friday 13 August
Anna confronted a surprised Julian working in her flat and suggested she and he go out for dinner to discuss the delicate situation. They returned to the flat after dinner, having agreed that Julian should stay on in the flat, now together with her.
Saturday 14 August
Meanwhile, Sofia Wiln, a girl previously unknown in those circles, had contacted the Brotherhood when she learned Julian would be in town, and asked for a seat for his talk. on Saturday 14 August.
That day, Julians talk lasted only half an hour. Julian, Anna, the Brotherhood Movements Chairman Peter Weiderud, Swedish journalist Donald Bostrm, and Swedish journalist Johannes Wahlstrm decided to get lunch in the area afterwards. Surprisingly, Peter Weiderud also invited along Sofia Wiln to the lunch, an action that startled and worried the two Swedish journalists Bostrm and Wahlstrm.
Peter Weiderud and Johannes Wahlstrm, during the lunch, came up with the idea of holding a traditional Swedish crayfish party (Swedish: krftskiva ) for Julian. The party would be held in the courtyard back of Annas flat that same evening.
Anna got to work on her mobile phone immediately, contacting people, inviting them, and telling them what they needed to bring along. Peter wouldnt attend, and Sofia wouldnt be invited, but the others would all be there.
Sofia, Johannes, and Julian wandered off together after the lunch to the Haymarket Square,
The guests at the crayfish party that evening included Kajsa Borgns, a colleague of Annas and also a member of the Social Democrats; Rick Falkvinge
The party went on until about 03:00 in the morning.
Some strange things happened at the crayfish party, all revealed in the testimony youre about to read. Youll read the jokes told by Anna about her relationship with Julian,
All this after a supposed incident during which, Anna Ardin would later claim, she had been the victim of a sexual assault.
Sunday 15 August
Julian and Anna met Rick Falkvinge and Anna Troberg the following day at the Glenfiddich Warehouse pub to sign the agreement whereby the Pirate Party would share hosting for WikiLeaks on their servers. Anna Ardin came in the official capacity of WikiLeaks press contact. Also present was Pirate Party network admin Richie Olsson, who took photographs of the occasion.
Monday 16 August
Johannes Wahlstrm received an SMS message from Anna Ardin in which she complained about Julians hygiene and mentioned that she washed his clothes. Johannes asks later that day if Anna is still willing to have Julian live at her flat, and she says that is it ok.
In the meantime, Sofia Wiln reached Julian by telephone on Monday 16 August. Julian was on his way to a meeting with Johannes Wahlstrm and others in Stockholm. Sofia lived in Enkping, which was quite a bit outside the city and a long commute; so she decided to wait in Stockholm until Julian was able to meet her. She then took him home to her flat for the night.
Tuesday 17 August
In the morning, Julian returned to Stockholm, and stayed at Annas flat until Friday 20 August.
Wednesday 18 AugustFriday 20 August
Julian continued to stay at Anna Ardins flat, but after Wednesday Anna decided that she did not want Julian staying with her any longer. At some point during the next few days, Sofia got in contact with Anna.
Julian moved out on Friday 20 August. That same day, Anna and Sofia went to the police station.
Anna now claimed that Julian had molested her on Friday 13 August, the night before the seemingly jovial crayfish party, by intentionally ripping the condom they were using. She was to tell the police she mostly likely had this used condom lying around somewhere in her flat, but had not checked to see if it was really broken.
Sofia was to claim that, although Julian had used condoms during multiple sessions of intercourse with her earlier that night and the next morning, he had attempted to penetrate her one last time without a condom. She said shed been dozing off to sleep, felt what he was doing, asked him coyly what he was wearing, whereupon he replied coyly Im wearing you, whereupon she told him hed better not have STDs, whereupon he told her of course not, whereupon they had intercourse again.
Now the Swedish authorities seem to be claiming that those few seconds of partial penetration before giving her approval were in effect rape.
Anna and Sofia met Annas friend Criminal Inspector Irmeli Krans at the police station, where the inspector took down Sofias testimony.
In the meantime, Prosecutor-on-duty Maria Hljebo Kjellstrand had received word of what was going on before Sofias testimony had begun, and immediately issued an arrest warrant for Julian Assange. The police were sent out to find Julian in Stockholm and arrest him.
Inspector Krans and Sofia were interrupted during the interrogation with news of the prosecutors decision to issue an arrest warrant for Julian. Inspector Krans wrote in her notes that Sofia became distressed at this point, making it impossible for Inspector Krans to complete the interrogation, read back her notes to Sofia, or get Sofias formal signed approval.
News of the arrest warrant reached freelance photographer Stefan Sderstrm at 19:52 that evening. Stefan was attending the prime ministers annual crayfish party at his summer residence in Harpsund outside Stockholm, along with Expressen reporter Niklas Svensson. Stefan was asked to get back to town at once as Julians arrest might be imminent, and Expressen wanted a photograph of the event. Niklas raced back to Expressen s offices in the Marieberg area of the city to assist reporter Diamant Salihu, whod already begun working on the story. Diamant had already contacted Prosecutor-on-duty Kjellstrand to get corroborationand unbelievably enough, the prosecutor had given it. This of course makes no sense at all, as the idea with the arrest was to detain Julian before he left the country, before he knew he was under arrest. And what Expressen would do was very much against Swedish journalistic guidelines: you never publish anyones name in such a situation.
