Yes, you might find some things in common between islands off Georgia or South Carolina, but none of them carry the same lan as Marthas Vineyard. The type of peopledare I say the quality of people?that trek to Marthas Vineyard every summer are without doubt the best of the best. Its a little like Sag Harbor, but more of it.
Here on an island that used to be a whaling center you have what some people call Hollywood East.
You get celebrities, yes, but also writers and academics and practically the entire East Coast Establishment intelligentsia. Conversation in the restaurants and bars always seems elevated to a fascinating level.
On all those other islandsfrom Pawleys Island to Catalinapeople go to get away from it all. Here on Marthas Vineyard, they bring a little of what they left behind with them.
I f you spend enough time here, youll see what I mean. You just meet the most interesting people in the world.
Whether you agree with their views or not is another matter, but thats why its fun and stimulating to talk to them.
M arthas Vineyard is broken up into 6 towns divided into the two sides of the island called Up Island and Down Island. (Though it would be more accurate for these divisions to be East Island and West Island.)
