ONE Zac Power was walking home from school. It was raining and he was getting wet.
He was grumpy. Both his mum and dad were on spy missions. They couldnt pick him up. Zacs parents were spies for a group called GIB. Everyone in Zacs family was a spy. Being a spy was top secret! Zac was a spy too.
He got to go on cool missions and he was GIBs test driver. He got to test drive awesome things like submarines and fighter jets. Zac turned a corner and saw a woman selling hats. She gave Zac a hat with pink and purple stripes. Its perfect for you, said the woman. Theres no way Id wear that, Zac thought. Theres no way Id wear that, Zac thought.
But he took the hat, anyway. A coded message fell out! Zac grinned. GIB must need me for something, he thought. He typed the message into his SpyPad. It decoded:
TOP SECRET FOR THE EYES OF
ZAC POWER ONLY MISSION SENT
FRIDAY 3.45 PM
Latest spy gear
to test drive:
Stickystorm
Autobiotic Glue-Gun
and
Squid Submersible END
The woman smiled at Zac as if she knew about GIB. Go over there, she said.
She pointed to a van on the other side of the street. Zac looked at the van. It had an open roller door and lots of gadgets inside. It must be a GIB van, thought Zac. As Zac got closer to the van he saw his brother Leon sitting inside. Hello, Zac, said Leon.
That was Agent Head Cover. Zac looked across the street and waved to the woman. Agent Head Cover winked. Climb inside, said Leon. This is a mobile test drive lab. Ive got some cool gadgets for you to test.
This is heaps better than walking in the rain! said Zac. CHAPTER
TWO Zac climbed up into the van. It was filled with all sorts of spy things. There were screens flashing coded messages. There were gadget parts and something that looked like a robot. Whats this, Leon? asked Zac, picking up the robot.
Its a gadget that I need you to test drive, said Leon. Its a glue-gun. Zac looked at the glue-gun. But it has legs, said Zac. This is a Stickystorm Autobiotic Glue-Gun, said Leon. It can fire globs of glue as it walks.
You can turn it on with your SpyPad. Zac got his SpyPad out. Every GIB agent had a SpyPad. GIB SpyPads were phones and code breakers in one. This is where you turn the glue-gun on, said Leon. You can test this gun on your mission, said Leon. You can test this gun on your mission, said Leon.
What mission? asked Zac. I thought I was just doing a test drive. Ive just been told that theres a leak at the underwater GIB base, said Leon. The leak needs to be glued up. You can use the glue-gun to do it. And then you can write your test drive report.
Zac rolled his eyes. He loved going on missions and test driving gadgets. He didnt like writing reports, though. Come on, lets go, said Leon. Zac and Leon climbed into the front of the van. Were going to the sea, said Leon.
Theres a sub there waiting for you. It needs a test drive. I call this sub the Squid Submersible. Youll know why soon. Cool, said Zac. CHAPTER
THREE Leon parked the van near the pier.
They got out of the van and walked down the pier. Watch this, said Leon. He pointed to a pile of seaweed floating on the water. I can call for the sub on my SpyPad. Thats cool, said Zac.
SUB UP
Leon spoke into the speaker on his SpyPad. The water started to swirl.
The seaweed started to move. Then Zac saw a cool vehicle come up from under the seaweed. It was a submarine, but it looked like a giant squid. It had big metal tentacles. Awesome, said Zac. Leon handed Zac the keys.
Youd better get going, Zac. And dont forget to do your test drive report. Zac took the keys. See you later, he said to Leon. Zac hit the button on the keys to unlock the sub. The hatch opened up.
Zac hopped into the drivers seat. The hatch closed. The jet engines started up. Zac was ready to go! CHAPTER
FOUR Zac set the squid to top speed. Then he looked at the squids screen. Excellent, Zac thought. I can just relax. I can just relax.
He pulled the handle on the side of his seat. The seat went back and a foot-rest popped up. Zac rested his head on the soft pillow. Then he heard a strange noise.
