The weather is much colder than usual in the . As a dark figure makes his way through the night, he doesnt feel the cold wind on his face. He doesnt even feel the bite of the icy waters as he dives into the freezing lake.
When he bursts out of the water, moonlight shines on the bold S-shield on his chest and his red cape. The freezing cold air doesnt bother him. He is Superman, the Man of Steel. He cant remember the last time he was cold.
Superman hasnt visited his secret Arctic base, the Fortress of Solitude, in several weeks. So when he emerges from the lake entrance, he wonders if he somehow got the location wrong. Superman looks up and sees a star-filled night sky. However, there should be a thick layer of ice above his head. There should also be chambers filled with Kryptonian technology, an intergalactic zoo, and trophies from his many adventures. But none of those things are here only a flat plain of snow and ice.
Superman doesnt have the location wrong. The Fortress of Solitude is missing!
Superman scans the ground with his X-ray vision. He sees nothing out of the ordinary, so he scans for other types of energy. Thats when he notices small amounts of strange floating in the air.
Most scientists would have no idea what could create such radiation. But Superman recognizes it instantly. Its left behind from a device called a Boom Tube. It is the preferred method of travel for the powerful New Gods.
Apokolips, Superman says out loud, breaking the silence of the cold air. He narrows his eyes. He knows that planet well. Its the homeworld of the powerful named Darkseid.
Supermans boots lift off the ice as he raises his arms. He shoots into the sky like a rocket. His red cape waves dramatically behind him in the wind. Superman balls his hands into fists as he breaks the sound barrier, leaving a thunderclap in his wake. If Darkseid has stolen the Fortress of Solitude, he has no time to waste. The hideout isnt just Supermans home away from home. It also houses a large supply of Kryptonite and some of the most dangerous weapons in the galaxy. They are weapons that should never fall into the wrong hands.
And there are no hands more dangerous than those of Darkseid.
No sooner does Superman touch down in Metropolis than he hears a familiar sound.
BOOM!
Supermans super-vision sees the sky light up with the same radiation he saw in the Arctic. A Boom Tube has opened over his city.
Even before the Man of Steels lightning-fast reflexes can kick in, hundreds of dark shapes cloud the Tubes circular entrance. An entire army of Parademons fills the sky above Metropolis. Each of the flying alien soldiers carries a laser rifle in its hands. They are ready for battle.
Their chanting words echo in the air. They simply say, Darkseid IS.
There is no choice in Supermans mind. He has to stay and defend his adopted city. Superman flies up toward the Boom Tube. A Parademon dives at him, its snarling jaws slobbering as it fires its laser rifle.
FZZZZAP!
Superman dodges the blast, swooping upward in one motion. He makes a fist with his right hand and smashes it into the Parademons jaw. The animal-like soldier falls from the sky and crashes onto a nearby rooftop. Superman continues on. He punches his way through a swarm of nearly identical creatures, armed with identical weapons.
But there are too many of them. No matter how many Parademons Superman takes out, three more seem to fly out of the still-open Boom Tube. Fighting them is like trying to stop a waterfall with a sponge.
One by one the creatures latch onto him until the Man of Steel is completely covered. He looks like a thriving mass of wings, claws, sharp teeth, and armor. The Parademons continue to pile on him even as he barely manages to hover in the air.
Suddenly, the creatures shoot off in every direction. Superman has thrown them off in a huge burst of strength. But more Parademons continue to attack. It wont be long before hes overcome once more. Superman needs a plan.
Superman knows there is only one being who could be responsible for this attack on Metropolis. The tyrant from Apokolips who rules with an iron fist Darkseid. Superman hates to leave Metropolis alone and unguarded. But he knows that the only way to save his adopted planet is to cut off this attack at the source.
Superman clenches his jaw and prepares for the battle to come. Then he flies through the Boom Tube above him.
BOOM!
The effect of the Boom Tube hits Superman harder than he expects. He falls to the ground, hundreds of feet below.
A few moments later, Superman opens his eyes. Hes dazed and it takes him a minute to remember where he is. Hes lying on the side of a dirty alleyway. The road twists through a series of rundown metal structures. The only people he sees scurry away into the shadows. They dont want to be a part of what theyve just seen.
Superman knows this place. Hes been here before. Its the Armagetto, the filthy, rundown home for most of the people of Apokolips.
Psst says a voice from the closest structure. The person is trying to be quiet, but Superman could hear his voice even if he simply mouthed the words. In here!
The sky over Metropolis looks like a living mass of wings, fangs, and claws. There are hundreds of Parademons flying out of the Boom Tube. Superman knows hes no match for a this size. He needs to gain some distance and see how widespread this problem really is.
In a flash of red and blue, he flies toward the furthest point of downtown Metropolis. Seeing no Parademons, Superman crouches down, then uses his powerful legs to shoot into the sky.
Hovering high above the city, Superman can now see what the Parademons are up to. The majority of the winged aliens are gathering near the Daily Planet Building. In the air above the building, the alien soldiers seem to be putting together some sort of large device.
Using his telescopic vision, Superman immediately recognizes the technology. Its Kryptonian. Whats worse, at the center of the device is a familiar green glow. Before Superman can react, the Parademons activate the machine.
The entire sky over Metropolis quickly turns an eerie shade of green. Superman suddenly feels weak. Its clear what has happened. The sky has been contaminated with Kryptonite!
