AboutFoxes
Foxes are mammals belonging to the family ofCanidae. They are omnivores; they eat both plants andmeat. Most fox have a bushy tail, triangular ears,a flat head, and a long nose, called a snout. Foxes' special eyes allow them to hunt atnight.
Their eyes are long and skinny, not roundlike many other animals. Fox have claws that they can pull back intotheir paws, like a cat. They don't chew their food; they just chunkit up before swallowing. Humans hunt fox for their beautiful fur.
Characteristics
Fox are small compared to other four leggedwild animals, like wolves, dogs, and jackals. Girl fox are called vixens and boys arecalled dogs or tods or reynards.
Fox can live up to 10 years in the wild, butmost die after about 2 - 3 years. Fox live in small family units. They pounce on their prey it makes for aneasy kill. Two species of fox, the Gray fox and RaccoonDog, can climb trees.
Foxes indifferent folklore and mythology
Red fox are in many folklore tails, aroundthe World. In Greek mythology, there was said to be ahuge red fox, which could never be caught.
In a Celtic tail, witches would turnthemselves into fox to go steal butter from their neighbors. In Korea, fox spirits which have nine tailsare called "Kumiho." In Peru, the Moche people worship the foxand foxes are found in many of their art pieces.
RedFox
The Red Foxes are considered to be thelargest among foxes. They live in Central America, Asia, theArctic Circle, and North Africa.
They like to hunt early in the morning orlater in the evening. They eat mainly mice, birds, reptiles, andsometimes vegetables and fruits.
Red fox can actually be red, silver/gray,black, brown, or a mixture. They are hunted by large cats (like the bobcat), wolves, jackals, and coyotes. They live in burrows that they dig in hills,bluffs, mountain slopes, ditches, and ravines.
GrayFox
These foxes live in the region between southCanada and northern South America. They used to be the most common fox, but toomuch fur trapping killed many of them. They eat rats, rabbits, mice, and manyvegetables.
Gray Foxes like to hunt at night. They yap when they bark. Gray fox are the only fox that is able toclimb trees. They live about 6 - 10 years in thewild.
ArcticFox
The Arctic fox is also known as the polarfox, white fox, and snow fox. They live in the arctic, mainly Alaska,where it is cold; this is why they have such thick fur.
Arctic Foxes' fur will change from white inthe winter to brown in the summer. They eat seal pups, fish, voles, andseabirds. They have very good hearing; they can hearanimals under the snow. When they find them, they will dig superfast until they reach them under the snow.
FennecFox
Fennec fox is also known as the desert foxand is the smallest among all fox. They live where it is hot, in the SaharaDesert, which is in North Africa and Asia.
Fennec foxes' have very long tails, whichhave a black tip. Their large ears help keep them cool, andwell as help them hear animals under the sand. They eat lots of plants, birds, reptiles,insects, rodents, and eggs.
