An adult literacy picture book designed to help teach adult complete beginners to both read and write. Designed for adult level 1 readers the book introduces no more than eight new words on every page and the PDF version is designed to be printed out so the student can then copy and learn to write the words as well as read them. The book itself has two main parts. Firstly, there is a story that commences with one illustrated word per page, but which then continues to use many of the most used words in UK English. The second part of the book comprises a work-sheet which can be printed out and used to help new readers write some of those words they have learned. Both parts of the book are meant for complete beginners. The first part is designed so that someone who is not a teacher can read the words out loud to the student, followed by the student remembering and then repeating the various pages until they can complete new pages themselves. The second part of the book is designed so that students can learn to write on their own by simply repeatedly copying the words they have learned both in block capitals and in script.

Introduction

I wasrecently working as a Care Support Worker on a hospital ward whereone of the patients was unable to read or write, and I tried tofind resources online that would enable me to help him, or whichwould enable him to help himself. Unfortunately I couldn't findanything free that was suitable so I created my own, and this bookis the result.

The bookitself has two main parts. Firstly, there is a story that commenceswith one illustrated word per page, but which then continues to usemany of the most used words in UK English. The second part of thebook comprises a work-sheet which can be printed out and used tohelp new readers write some of those words they havelearned.

Both partsof the book are meant for complete beginners. The first part isdesigned so that someone who is not a teacher can read the wordsout loud to the student, followed by the student remembering andthen repeating the various pages until they can complete new pagesthemselves. The second part of the book is designed so thatstudents can learn to write on their own by simply repeatedlycopying the words they have learned both in block capitals and inscript. The book is available in various formats but will be mostuseful in pdf format that can be printed off for the personlearning.

I have nottaught for some time, but I do actually hold a very dusty and very old TrinityCollege TESOL Teaching Certificate earned many years ago so anymistakes are mine. I do hope you will find the book useful, and youcan let me know by using the contact details listed at the end ofthe book.

I haveincluded a couple of simple stories which, I hope, will encourage students tokeep reading without becoming too bored, and to aid the learningprocess I have included images to illustrate them. The images haveall been supplied by freelance graphic artist Khun Lwin, withoutwhose support the book would have been a lot duller. His contactdetails can also be found at the end of the book.

The pictures in the first part ofthe book are designed to help maintain the student's interest. Thewords themselves are arranged in rows, to allow all rows other thanthe top one to be covered up, and to allow each subsequent row tobe uncovered only once the preceding row has beenmastered.

In addition, each part of the book starts on a new page in order that theteaching material can be printed off without this introductorysection, and at the start of each story the amount printed on eachpage is limited so as not to overwhelm the student. As each storyprogresses, and as the number of pre-learned words increases, sothe number of words on each page increases. Throughout the stories there are never more than eightnew words per page , andthe remaining words are repetitions of words alreadylearned.

The secondpart of the book includes a guide to allow the student to copyevery word included in the first part, both individual words and in sentences, in blockcapitals and in lower case, to improve both their reading andwriting.
