Despite the many things he did for Americ a, Hamiltons name is ofte n missing from sto ries starri ng the like s of George Wa shington, Thomas Jeerson, John Ada ms, and Benjamin Fra nklin. In many wa ys, this is Hamiltons o wn faulthe wrote down m any of his worst mist akes f or all to see! R ecent ly, however , Americans hav e take n a second look at Hamilton and his import ant place in early America n history . Lets learn some more about this Fo unding Father!
Alexander Hamilton wa s born on an island in the Caribbean Sea, but became an important part of early America n history .

I ts either 1755 or 1757 , but no one can be sur e! Hamilton was born on Ne vis, a tiny island in the Cari bbean Sea. His father wa s a Scott ish trader, and his mother was a Frenchwom an.

When Hamilton wa s a boy, his family move d to the island of St. Croix.
An apprentice is someone who learns a job from a person who has done that job for a long time.

Hamilton grew up wit hout a fath er .
H amiltons father , a failed businessman, desert ed his family when Alex ander was yo ung. His mother , Rachel, supported Alex ander and his bro ther by running a small shop until she died when Hamilton was about 12 . A fter Hamiltons mother died and Hamilton went t o America to study , his older brother r emained in St. Cro ix. Little is known ab out him, though at one point he wa s apprentice d to a car penter.
Hamilton tra veled to New Y o rk City, where he ke pt writing and aended school.

Hamilton wa s such a good wri ter t hat he received a f ree e ducati on.
I n 1772, teenage Hamilton wr ote to his father tellin g about a hurrican e that had hit St. Croix. The le tter late r appeared in the Royal Danish American Gazette . Readers f ound it so beautiful they c ollecte d money to send the y oung writer to America fo r an education.
