ALIEN INVASION!
The distant city is surrounded in a hazy glow. With all its neon signs and street lamps, the stars are barely visible from the rooftop of your apartment building. Thats why youre standing out in the middle of a field on a school nightto get a clear view of the sky. Thousands of brilliant points of light dot the darkness above.
Your best friend, Jacob, was supposed to be here with you. You are working on an project together. He said hed meet you just after sunset, but that was an hour ago.
You glance at your phone. He hasnt returned any of your texts. Worry fills your thoughts. Did his parents ground him? Did he crash his bike?
You cant let Jacobs tardiness stop you. Your curfew is in a couple of hours, and you need to make some observations to complete your assignment.
You just wish Jacob was here to help. You had to lug your gear all the way from the side of the road, where you left your bike, to a clearing in the field. That was after the 5-mile bike ride to get here, which wasnt easy with your telescope strapped to your back. But at least everything is set up now.
Your telescope has an 80mm refractor lens, and on a clear night, you can see the rings of Saturn. Tonight, youre actually hoping to chart a couple of Saturns larger moons. That should earn you an A on your project.
You check your phone again. Nothing.
Where is Jacob?
You will have to start without him. You turn to your telescope and spot Saturn low in the sky. Its a bright unblinking dot amongst the dimmer, twinkling stars. You aim your telescope in its direction and bend over to peek through the eyepiece.
After fiddling with the controls for a moment, you bring the planet into focus. Saturns rings have a 3D effect, making the planet look like its just hanging there in front of you.
Suddenly, a flash of light fills the lens and blinds you. You stagger backward.
What was that? you wonder, as you rub the fuzziness from your eyes. A ?
But once your vision clears, you are amazed at how wrong you are. Hovering high up in the sky is a large bluish light surrounded by several smaller swirling lights. They are all too big to be planets or stars and moving around too randomly to be . One swoops down near the ground and then shoots back up to rejoin the others. Another darts ahead of the rest, only to regroup a second later.
Your imagination can come up with only one answer to what they might be. Its a thought that both frightens and excites you: UFOs!
That has to be it. Nothing else could move like they do. Not weather balloons or airplanes, birds or bugs.
Your heart begins to race. If only Jacob were here, youd have someone to back up your story. No ones going to believe you saw a UFO.
You start to turn your telescope toward the alien craft to get a better look at them, but they quickly scatter. Only the largest of the lights holds its place in the sky. You wonder if its the mother ship.
One of the smaller lights settles behind some trees along the edge of the field. Having an alien spaceship land so close frightens you. It could be dangerous, yet curiosity is urging you to investigate.
This is an opportunity you cant pass up. You have to see what the aliens look like. And you have to take a few photosproof for those people who wont believe you actually saw a UFO.
You grab the pack lying next to your telescope. Inside is a flashlight with red film taped over the end of the lens. You flick it on, and it glows red. Its a trick you learned in your astronomy class. Red light does not affect your night vision.
The alien ship is in the opposite direction of your bike, but you dont care, even if it means staying out past curfew and possibly getting in trouble. Your parents will understand when they see the pictures.
You jog across the field, keeping your flashlight aimed low at the ground so you can avoid any ruts in the field. You have to slow down when you get to the trees. Branches swat at your face and arms. Roots threaten to trip up your feet.
You creep through the brush as quietly as you can. When you near the edge of the foliage, you stop and duck behind a tree. Peeking around its trunk, you spot a disc-shaped craft in a clearing. It hovers a few feet above the ground. A sphere of blue light protrudes from the bottom and crackles with the hum of energy. The ship is small. It cant be more than 20 feet in diameter and is probably six feet high.
Might be a scout ship, you think.
You want to sneak closer to get a better look. But then a hatch opens in the bottom of the craft. You duck back behind the tree.
What descends from the opening isnt a little green manits a robot. The robot stands about waist high and is shaped like a large soda can. It hovers inches above the ground on a smaller version of the blue energy orb that powers the spacecraft.
Numerous antennas stick out from the robots body. They whirl and jerk about as they scan the area. Several arms with clawed hands extend from panels on the robot. The hands reach down to pick up rocks, leaves, twigsanything they can find. The items are then deposited in an opening atop the robot. It looks like its gathering samples, but why?
Youve never really believed in aliens. Until now. That was mostly because the people who tell stories about them always seemed a bit odd. But now that youve seen a UFO, you dont want to risk being poked and prodded by little green men. So you pack up your telescope and gear. You sling the bag over your shoulder. Then you hunch down, and as quickly as you can, you jog toward your bike.
Despite the possible danger, you regret not getting any pictures. It would be cool to have proof that you saw a UFO. Youre pretty sure if you mention anything to your friends, theyll call you nuts and tease you about it.
You glance back, curious to see where the alien ship is. To your surprise, its now hovering over the clearing where you had set up your telescope. A green beam of light shines down from the ship. The light whirls around on the ground as if scanning for something.
Do they know Im out here? you wonder.
