Giant Pandas
Giant pandas are famous for their black and white fur. They are big
animals that look like bears. Some
scientists believe giant pandas are
bears. Others believe giant pandas
and bears are not related.
Giant pandas are good
at climbing trees.
Pandas are mammals. Mammals
are born alive instead of hatching
from eggs. They use lungs to breathe
air. Female mammals make milk
in their bodies to feed their young.
Most mammals have hair or fur.
Giraffes, tigers, seals, and people are
mammals too.
There are many
kinds of mammals.
What They
Look Like
Giant pandas are large animals.
They are about six feet (2 m) long from
nose to tail. Adult giant pandas weigh
between 165 and 350 pounds (75 and
159 kg). Females are smaller than males.
Giant pandas have longer
tails than most other bears.
Giant pandas have thick fur. This fur
helps keep them warm.
Giant pandas have large heads and round ears. They walk on four thick legs.
Pandas have special pads on their feet.
These pads keep them from slipping
on the ice.
Panda Thumbs
Pandas have an extra bone in their
front paws. This bone is almost like
a thumb. Pandas cannot move their
thumbs much. But this bone helps
them hold
onto things.
It helps
pandas grip
bamboo.
Where They Live
Giant pandas live in southwestern China. They live in the provinces of
Shaanxi, Gansu, and Sichuan. Giant
pandas live high in the mountains.
They stay in forests.
Pandas migrate twice a year. They
travel up the mountain for the summer.
They go down the mountain for the
winter.
Giant pandas live in
the forests of China.
Eating
Giant pandas mostly eat bamboo plants. Pandas sit while they eat. They hold bamboo in a paw and
chew it. Giant pandas chew on
bamboo for much of the day. They
eat the stems, leaves, and shoots.
Pandas often sit with their
legs out in front of them.
An adult giant panda eats about
30 pounds (14 kg) of bamboo each
day. Pandas also eat flowers and mushrooms. They eat small animals such as mice and fish too.
Pandas spend about
12 hours a day eating.
Red Pandas
There is another kind of panda. It is called the red panda. Red pandas live
in mountain forests of China. They also
live in Nepal, India, and Myanmar.
The red panda has reddish-brown fur. It looks like a raccoon. Some
scientists believe red pandas are related to raccoons.
