Whats a Bug?

There are billions of bugs on Earth! Bug is the word used for insects, spiders, and other small animals that look like them. Insects are animals with a three-part body and six legs! Can you name any of these bugs ?

This bug is known for its bright red color and black spots. Its small and has short legs. Like many bugs, it has antennae, which are body parts that help animals sense the world around them. What is it?

Its a ladybug! Ladybugs are a bright color to let predators know they taste bad. There are about 5,000 species, or kinds, of ladybugs. Most ladybugs eat plant-eating pests, so farmers love them. But a few eat plants, and farmers dont like them!

Hardworking Bug

Its easy to tell this bug is an insect. It has a large head and a narrow area between its other two body parts. This bug is known for being strong, and it has strong jaws, too. What is it?

Its an ant! Like most insects, ants hatch from eggs. The queen ant may lay thousands of eggs! Ants live in big groups, which may be found in trees or underground.

Beautiful Flyer

Many insects have wings, but this bugs are more noticeable than most! After hatching, this bugs larva is called a caterpillar. It makes a chrysalis when its ready to grow into an adult. Can you name the bug?

Its a butterfly! The monarch butterfly shown here is common in North and South America. You can spot monarchs by their orange-yellow and black wings. Like the ladybug, these colors tell predators they arent good to eat!
