Making a Splash

A grayish animal leaps out of the ocean, splashing about in the water with its friends. Its too small to be a whale. Is it a dolphin or something else? Maybe its a porpoise! If youve ever had trouble telling the two animals apart, read on to see how theyre different.

Dolphins, porpoises, and whales are all marine mammals in the animal group Cetacea. The name Cetacea is from a Greek word that means large sea creature. Dolphins and porpoises are much alike in size and shape, and many of them act the same way in the ocean.

There are more than different species, or kinds, of dolphin, which belong to part of an animal family called Delphinidae. Porpoises have six different species and are part of an animal family called Phocoenidae. Though they look similar, scientists say comparing them is like comparing cats to dogs!

All About Teeth

If you can catch a look inside their mouth, the best way to tell the difference between a porpoise and a dolphin is their teeth! Dolphins have cone-shaped teeth. Porpoises have flatter teeth that are spade shaped.

How do you tell these mammals apart when they arent showing their teeth? Their head shape is another clue. Dolphins have longer and larger beaks than porpoises. Dolphins also have thinner bodies, while porpoises look rounder.

Fins are important because they help dolphins and porpoises swim. The dorsal fin, which sits on their back, is slightly different for the two groups. Most porpoises have a triangle-shaped dorsal fin. The fin on dolphins is a more hooklike or curved shape.
