ST. MARKS BASILICA TOUR

Basilica di San Marco

Among Europes churches, St. Marks is peerless. From the outside, its a riot of domes, columns, and statues, completely unlike the towering Gothic churches of northern Europe or the heavy Baroque of much of the rest of Italy. Inside, the decor of mosaics, colored marbles, and oriental treasures is rarely seen elsewhere. The Christian symbolism is unfamiliar to Western eyes, done in the style of Byzantine icons and even Islamic designs. Older than most of Europes churches, it feels like a remnant of a lost world.

This is your best chance in Italy (outside of Ravenna) to glimpse a forgotten and somewhat mysterious part of the human storyByzantium.

(See map)

Cost: Though entering the church is free, three separate, optional sights inside the church require paid admission: the Treasury (3, includes audioguidefree for the asking), Golden Altarpiece (2), and San Marco Museumthe sight most worth its entry fee (4, enter museum up stairs from atrium either before or after you tour the church, skip the 3.50 audioguide).

Hours: The church is open Mon-Sat 9:45-17:00, Sun 14:00-17:00 (Sun until 16:00 Nov-March); the Treasury and Golden Altarpiece close 15 minutes earlier. The San Marco Museum is open daily 9:45-16:45.

Lines: Theres almost always a long line to get into St. Marks. Once inside, its usually crowded, and you just have to shuffle through on a one-way system. Its best to read this chapter before you go...or while standing in line. Those checking a bag can skip to the front of the linesee Bag Check on the next page.

Dress Code: Modest dress (no bare knees or bare shoulders) is strictly enforced, even for kids. Shorts are OK if they cover the knees. To cover bare shoulders, women may be able to buy a shawl (coprispale) at the atrium gift shop.

Getting There: Signs throughout Venice point to San Marco, meaning both the square and the church. Vaporetto stops: San Marco or San Zaccaria.
