Galleria dellAccademia

The Accademia (ack-ah-DAY-mee-ah) is the greatest museum anywhere for Venetian Renaissance art and a good overview of painters whose works youll see all over town. Venetian art is underrated and, I think, misunderstood. Its nowhere near as famous today as the work of the florescent Florentines, butwith historical slices of Venice, ravishing nudes, and very human Madonnasits livelier, more colorful, and simply more fun.

Hours: Mon 8:15-14:00, Tue-Sun 8:15-19:15, last entry 45 minutes before closing.

Avoiding Lines: Visit early or late to miss the crowds (300 people are allowed in at any one time). Better yet, reserve an entry time (1) at least a day in advance. Its better to do this by phone (tel. 041-520-0345; calls answered Mon-Fri 9:00-18:00, Sat 9:00-14:00, closed Sun) than online, since you cant cancel or change Internet reservations ( www.gallerieaccademia.org ). Reserved tickets must be picked up 20 minutes in advance.

Getting There: The museum faces the Grand Canal, just over the Accademia Bridge (15-minute walk from St. Marks Squarefollow signs to Accademia ). Vaporetto stop: Accademia.

Renovation: The museum is nearing the end of a years-long expansion, which will open up the ground floor to visitors. In 2012, some rooms may still be closed for construction, traffic may be rerouted, and some paintings may reside temporarily in other rooms. A few key works may not be on view at all. Expect changes, and be flexible in taking this tour.
