A big dog with an even bigger heart, Baxter is just as happy hunting as he is hanging out in the backyardas long as there are hijinks to get up to!
Baxter is a big, black retriever who has many humorous encountersboth in the great outdoors and at home. With his can-do attitude, superior size and strength, tendency to retrieve bears and mountain lions instead of small game, and way of endearing himself to any hunter who takes a dog along, this gentle giant will carve out a place in the hearts of outdoorsmen for years to come. Baxter is ready to have fun, and no acre of woods or inch of water is spared from his delightfully outsized antics.
Whether hes pulling a stuck boat or car, destroying his latest doghouse, retrieving other hunters birds, or hauling in a sixty-pound catfish, Baxter is as entertaining as ever, mounting more laughs than game. With more than one hundred eighty original, beautifully illustrated, and cleverly captioned cartoons, theres no mistaking this comic collection for anything but another sure-to-be beloved classic of syndicated cartoonist John Troy. The perfect gift for anyone who has ever found a friend in a rascal of a hunting dog, Baxter the Retriever is page after page of laughs from this hilarious hound.

Foreword

In this book you will meet Baxter, the large, lovable, impulsive, black retriever, who loves hunting. His adventures will give you an inside look into the way he thinks and acts. A dogs point of view, if you will. This sometimes frustrates his owner, but in the long run, Baxter is always loved.

His owner finds hunting from a boat doesnt work out too wellhe falls into the water when Baxter jumps in to retrieve the ducks! Or, how about catching a fish and asking Baxter to throw it in the live well with the others as it lands in Baxters mouth? My wife and I did own a similar dog, Rontu, who shows up in some of these cartoons. He would jump into the water, catch those sunnies, and eat them! One day he actually jumped into shallow water headfirst from our canoe and got his head stuck in the mud.

You will see Baxter retrieving a pheasant and surprising his owner by bringing it back with two other dogs attached. Does this qualify for a double? wonders the owner.

Picnics are one of Baxters favorite things! But not when he accidentally eats the jalapeo hot dog sauce! And, watch out! If you sit next to the water while having your picnic, you will definitely find yourself wet when he jumps into the water.

Its a challenge to bring along Baxters lunch, which is heavy enough to be mistaken for an overnight backpack. Even Santa has a challenge when he sees Baxters stocking hung by the fireplace.

Then there is the problem of finding a vet who wants to treat Baxter as all the vets recommend taking Baxter to a large animal vet. Thats also a problem when looking for a doghouse. They just dont make them big enough! On the plus side, Baxters owner never has to take his children to go pony riding.

These are only some of the adventures that will make you laugh and think about the pets you have owned doing some of these very same antics.

What could be more comforting than waking up in the middle of the night and reaching down to feel your dog lying on the floor at your side of the bed. We all know the joy of having pets, and they will always have a place in our hearts. The memories of all these moments will last forever.
