    SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We would especially like to thank Ephraim Sammy Rosenbaum for his work on this manual. He is one of the coauthors of this book not just in spirit, but in fact. If it were not for technical considerations, his name would appear with ours on the cover.

Doing the proper thing at a poker table isnt just good for its own sake, it can make your table a happier place to be for everyone, and a place more conducive to winning money for you.
Be polite. It will make you feel better, and make other people feel better (and also less likely to snap at you).

Its not the dealers fault youre losing; dont act like it somehow is.
Talking is okay; droning on ceaselessly about banal trivia is not.
Dont criticize another players play; either hes right and youre not (in which case youre acting like a fool) or hes a fish and youre running the risk of alienating him and making him leaveor making him play better (in which case you are also acting like a fool).
Dont slowroll; for the love of everything that is holy to you, do not slowroll.
If you accidentally slowroll, apologize profusely and immediately.
Try not to use foul language. Yes, it sounds a bit Sunday-schoolish, but many people are offended by it. And what do you gain by using it?
    Tip when and where customary.
GLOSSARY OF POKER TERMS AND COMMON NAMES FOR POKER HANDS
Action: Any poker act: a bet, a check, a call, a raise, and a fold are all action. Action can also mean that there is a lot of betting and raising going on at the table.

American Airlines: Pocket aces. Also Asian Airlines.

Angle-shooting: The practice of skirting the line, ethically, in terms of poker strategies. Deliberately miscalling your hand in order to induce a muck, pretending you dont know its your turn to act in the hope that someone after you will act and you can look into the future, etc.

Ante: Money every player is required to put in the pot (or, occasionally, just the dealer) before the cards are dealt. In modern poker, blinds have largely replaced antes, although antes are still sometimes used in later stages of tournament play.

All-in: To place all of the chips in front of you in the pot; it can be as a bet, call, or a raise. If other players are still left in the hand, a side pot is created, which the all-in player cannot participate in, although he is still eligible for the main pot.

Backdoor: Flopping one card to your straight or flush (needing two more) and then having the turn and river bring that straight or flush. For example, if you have JT of diamonds, the flop brings J83, the turn brings a 2, and the river an A, you have just got a backdoor flush.

Bad beat: Any time a hand that is a big favorite is beaten by a considerably weaker hand. Usually these involve some type of runner runner situation. For example, pocket aces flopping A96 against pocket deuces. Deuces have almost no chance to win hereonly another pair of running deuces will win. If that happens, its a bad beat. Some casinos actually pay jackpots for thisthe losing player gets a cash payout for being beaten this way, and the person who beat him gets a somewhat smaller payout.

Bankroll: The total amount of money a player has at his disposal for gambling purposes.

Behind: A player is behind when he has called for chips that have not yet arrived. Frequently, the dealer will announce the amount the player is behind before dealing the next hand, so that other players will not become confused and think the behind player has fewer chips than he in fact has.

Big blind: The larger of the two blinds (forced bets) typically in board games like holdem and Omaha. The big blind is equal to the full amount of the first-round bet. (A big blind almost always comes with a small blind.) The blind is placed in the pot before the cards are dealt.

Big slick: AK in the pocket.

Bluff: To bet on a hand against a player or players who have or are perceived to have a better hand than the bluffer. Note: When the players who are bluffed turn out to have inferior holdings, people sometimes say of their bluffs: I was bluffing with the best hand.

Board: The community cards in a board game like holdem or Omaha. It can be the flop, or the flop, plus turn, or the flop, plus turn, plus river.
