I had always been interested in the mind processes of serial killers, mass murderers and other notable traits of evil. I had always wanted to know more, as macabre as it is, about their crimes and how they were enacted.

After many months of research, double checking multiple facts and hunting down some names that most will never have heard of, I am honoured to share with you individual serial killer case files on a weekly basis.

It is a lengthy list that has taken over half a year to pull together, complete with facts, dates, names and some of their most nefarious crimes. The case files are compiled not just from a list of serial killers, but also mass murderers. Their mind frames may work in completely different ways but either one has the darkness within them to pluck people from the living in the most destructive of ways.

The weekly case files are non-exclusive and take into account every country in the world, not just the USA. In this fifth week, we delve into the creation and attributes of Russia's most infamous and evil serial killer, Andrei Chikatilo.

Andrei's brutality can not easily be forgotten. He is the classic necrosadist where the very act of killing was his form of sexual pleasure. In fact, Andrei admitted himself that he could only ejaculate when stabbing his child and female victims. Even as his lust was being sated, he would begin chewing pieces of flesh from his victim's bodies to further control his sexual frustrations.

In making sure the facts are correct, I have sought out various different references from original court reports, killer interviews, to biographical musings from surviving victims or people known to the killer. You will find a fact list that has been triple-checked for accuracy. For those killers where information has been hard to obtain I have used the median average for each relevant statistic, such as supposed murders.

B efore Alexander Pichushkin came along, Andrei Chikatilo was on of the most revered killers to have ever tarnished the Russian motherland. He was born in what is now the Ukraine and his crimes were committed across many areas of Russia, including the Ukrainian SSR and the Uzbek SSR.

His crimes were of the most damning kind, almost all of his victims suffered sexual assault and mutilation resulting in the murders of 52 (confirmed) children and women. Some reports state that he was convicted of 53 but the actual court report of that day in 1994, two years after his capture, states it as 52. He did, however, confess to 56 murders.

A ndrei grew up in a split household where his mother was constantly berating him and at some points was incredibly strict, whereas his father was a kind and generous man. His father was drafted into the Red Army during the war, wounded and subsequently captured by the nazis.

Andrei Chikatilo witnessed some of the horrors of World War Two, during the nazi occupation of the Ukraine including burnings, bombings and shootings. He would share a bed with his mother in fear but because of his constant bed-wetting, she would berate and beat him for it.

It was about this time that the horrors of World War 2 would begin to embed itself into the mind of a young Chikatilo. People at that time in that part of Ukraine were said to have gone crazy, they attacked and ate other people. In a later interview after his capture he stated:

They caught my brother, who was only ten, they ate him, and sold some of his flesh for food.

He also saw the direct results of Nazi occupation and was stated as saying that he literally saw bodies being blown up in to the air to fall down in a crumpled bloody mess on the dangerous streets below. He did say that the sight of this both scared him and excited him. From this obvious and saturated exposure to things that no human should have seen, he started to develop images of torture in his head.

His first sexual experience was when he was 17, with a 10yo friend of his sister's. It was the first time he was able to ejaculate, he said he was able to do it with images of torture in his mind. He was normally shy around girls but he had wrestled his sister's friend to the ground and forced himself upon her. He didn't rape her, he couldn't, but some reporters see that moment as a pre-cursor of things to come. After he graduated he was denied a place at the Moscow State University some say because of his father's disappointing war record.

After a series of embarrassments when girls his age started to question his impotence, according to Andrei, he tried to hang himself in his mother's home but his mother and some neighbours helped to lift the noose off. With nothing left in his life and the embarrassment of his failures, he moved away to a small town near Rostov-on-don.

A ndrei went directly into the army but it didn't last long. Interesting to note here that some serial killers including Dennis Nilson, spend time in the military but it never lasts long and always seems to be another catalyst for their desires.

When he returned home he tried many times to find a girlfriend, but he was still unable to perform sexually and rumours started spreading about his sexual inadequacies. He felt humiliated and dreamed about torturing the girls who were cruel to him.

He then went on to become a school teacher and did finally get married in a somewhat arranged marriage by his sister. Yet, it was not too long before his wife criticized everything he did, including his actions in the bedroom. He felt at that time that his life was a disaster and his torture fantasies increased. His wife and mother criticized him constantly and he even tried to have children with his wife.

It is said that he could only attempt conception by ejaculating on to his hands and then pushing it inside his wife.

In 1973, when he was 37, his mother died and it was not long before he found himself attracted to young girls. He started abusing some of the girls in his school. It started with gentle touching and stroking but then his lust got the better of him and began to grope and forcefully touch the girls sexually. This made him feel powerful and he enjoyed the feeling this gave him.
