Introduction

August 16 1977 approx. 2pm

When paramedics, Ulysses Jones and Charlie Crosby, were called to Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, the King of rock and roll, they werent sure what to expect. After being directed upstairs by a bodyguard, they found a man lying on the bathroom floor, surrounded by a group of people. Elviss girlfriend, Ginger Alden, and his road manager and close friend, Joe Esposito, were amongst them.

The man lay on his back with pajama bottoms around his knees. His top was open, exposing dark blue, almost black, folds of cold flesh. Jones immediately dropped to his knees to check for signs of lifehe found none. The body was in a complete state of 'rigor mortis with lividity, although the police report stated that the condition of the alleged victim was in an unconscious state.

It is widely believed the deceased man lying on Elvis bathroom floor was a donor who had passed away almost three weeks earlier.

Afterwards, both paramedics would tell their captain they didnt recognize the man as Elvis. In actual fact, they went as far as to say the dead man definitely wasnt Elvis. They were warned to keep that information to themselves.

According to Phil Aitcheson (Director of The Presley Commission) in his interview with Gary James, it is believed that Charlie Crosby was later killed for running his mouth. Apparently he met with an unfortunate accident. He was pushed out of an airplanereportedly murdered.

This was the beginning of the conspiracy theories that have spanned decades.

Anybody alive back then probably remembers where they were when they heard the news of Elviss passing. I was a young boy, barely nine years old. Although I didnt realize what the big deal was at the time, I remember the wave of sadness that passed over those I knew. My mothers wails could be heard around the house and I remember my father, an ex-Marine, consoling her and poking at the corners of his own eyes.

But now, as a grown man with a family of my own, I realize what a tragedy it was to lose such an icon, in the prime of his life. Why wasnt Elviss illness detected prior to his supposed fatal heart attack? This is the question on many peoples lips even now, all these years later. That and the other popular question, did he die at all?.

The idea that the most adulated and idolized of celebrities faked his own death seems too far-fetched, doesnt it? What would compel a man with his level of stardom, power, wealth, and esteem to want to walk away from all he had worked so hard for? Yet still, reports people had seen Elvis alive and well after that fateful day came thick and fast. In fact, by the time the Federal Bureau of Investigations files had been released a short time later, there had already been over three thousand sightings. But hold on back the bus up why did the FBI have a file on Elvis Presley in the first place? He was just an entertainer as he stated on more than one occasion to fans and journalists alike. But, Elvis had been the target of many extortion attempts that were investigated by the FBI. Added to that were the numerous complaints about his music and stage show by concerned citizens. Critics both loved and hated him. As Elvis became more popular, the older generation began to resent the young entertainer and controversy quickly surrounded him. Young girls swooned over him. The fact that Elvis shook his hips, thrust his pelvis, and danced wildly on stage, turned parents against his music. He posed a threat to the values that white American society strongly believed in. The documents released spanned from 1956 to 1980, although, apparently, half of the FBI files are still classified. When I heard this, the hair shot up on the back of my neck. What could be so top secret that the powers that be dont want us to know all these years later? We will look at these files in more detail further into the book.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves Lets go back to the beginning.

Once the word leaked of Elviss passing, mourners descended in droves to the gates of Graceland. In record time, Elvis had been placed in an open, custom-made casket (that had been ordered months in advance) and returned to Graceland for viewing. What was the big rush? An event of this magnitude would certainly take a lot of planning, yet in just twenty-four hours Elvis had been declared dead, autopsied, embalmed, his body released, and returned home. How was all of this planned and executed so fast and why? The sixteen white Cadillac limousines, and white hearse wouldve taken a fair amount of organizing in itself. As would the amount of security personnel needed for such a massive event. Such haste must have raised a few eyebrows.

Elviss cousin, Gene Smith, viewed the body. This is what he said

I stood there quite a while looking at him looking at his hands. And, um, of course he was always breaking bricks with his hands, (Elvis had been a Karate master) he had callouses on the bottom of his hands and big ol rough looking knuckles. His nose looked kind of puggy looking, and his right side-burn was sticking outstraight out about an inch. And his hair-line looked as if it had been, uh, a hair-piece or something glued on. It just didnt look right. And, um, his hands were smooth as a newborn babys behind, you know? And it seemed like he was sweating on his around his hairline. It couldve been sweat, it couldve been glueI dont know. But, um, I just didnt believe it was him

Gene wasnt the only person to come to this conclusion and for the same - photo 3

Gene wasnt the only person to come to this conclusion, and for the same reasons.

According to Phil Aitcheson (Director of The Presley Commission) in his interview with Gary James
