Every so often, we get a photo contest entry that's so compelling our editors elect to use it on the book's front cover separate from the placements designated for our first- and second-place contest winners. This year we awarded the honor to Cody Bear, a frequent traveler and running enthusiast from Pennsylvania.
Editors' Pick Cody Bear
This amiable golden retriever is shown here vacationing at Seven Springs Resort in Champion, Penn. His family says they wouldn't dream of leaving Cody Bear at home when they travel. They especially enjoy bringing Cody Bear and his sister Ginger to Seven Springs so the dogs can run all they want.
1st place winner Jack Ryan
Jack Ryan, a joyful Pembroke Welsh corgi from California, is pictured enjoying a family camping trip at Shaver Lake, Calif. Chock-full of contagious enthusiasm for every sight, sound and scent of nature, Jack Ryan is a welcome travel companion and eager explorer. He and his family especially enjoy visiting beautiful Shaver Lake, surrounded by pine trees, fern grottos and hiking trails.
2nd place winner Mandie
Mandie, an enthusiastic Labrador retriever from California, loves outdoor activities. She's pictured enjoying a romp in the snow at Mammoth Lakes, Calif. Mandie brings her family great joy with her spontaneity and fun, keeping them warm at night and on the go. She carries her own backpack when enjoying favorite activities camping and hiking.

Traveling With Pets
Many people view their pets as full-fledged members of the family. Spot and Snowball often have their own beds, premium-quality foods, a basketful of toys and a special place in their humans hearts.
Until it's time to go on vacation, that is. Then the family dog or cat is consigned to watching the fort at home while everyone else experiences the joy of traveling. Many animal lovers hesitate to take their pet with them because they dont think theyll be able to find accommodations that accept four-legged guests. Others arent sure how or if their furry friends will adapt.
The truth is, including a pet in the family vacation is fairly easy, so long as you plan ahead. Most pets respond well to travel, a fact that isnt lost on the tourism industry. More than 14,000 AAA Approved hotels and campgrounds from coast to coast are pet-friendly, and airline bookings for pet passengers are on the rise. Great companions at home, pets are earning their stripes on the road, too.
So if youve been longing to hit the trail with a canine or feline companion, read the tips on the following pages. You may find that a getaway can be far more enjoyable with than without your pet.
