Innocent Prey

On November 29, 1992, Judy Blake Moilanen, 35, took her dogs for a walk in the north Michigan woods. It was the last time she would be seen alive. She was found shot through the chest, a seeming hunting accident victim. But state police Sergeant Bob Ball remained skeptical. . .

Naked Greed

Judys husband, Bruce, 37, was the beneficiary of insurance policies with accidental death clauses that would pay off $330,000 in claims. Disturbing facts soon surfaced about a prior incident in which Judy had narrowly escaped being killed by a concrete block that had fallen from the roof where her husband was working. On a separate occasion, a fire had broken out as she and her 3-year-old daughter slept alone in the house.

Table of Contents

Acknowledgments
Many thanks to Bob Ball, whose memory was as meticulous as his investigation, and Beth Paczesny, whose enthusiasm for the book project matched the energy she exuded in prosecuting the case. Thanks to David Blake and Lee Anne Jessup for their insightful and empathetic recollections of Judy Blake Moilanen as well as their equally insightful though far less empathetic recollections of Bruce Moilanen. And further thanks to dozens of others who provided a tidbit here and a tidbit there that helped bring the manuscript to life.
Epilogue
Bruce Robert Moilanen was sentenced to life without parole on January 21, 1994. He was sent initially to Marquette Branch Prison, where he was visited a few days later.
I was tried and convicted by the media before I ever got into court, he said.
He has exhausted his appeals and lost a legal battle for parental rights.

Tom Casselman no longer represents Bruce Moilanen. He had done what he could do with what little he had.
I felt wed earned a moral victory when the jury didnt come back in ten minutes, he said. I knew wed done a good job, but I didnt have any doubt they would convict.

Bob Ball, now retired to a security position in the private sector, and Don Poupore, now post commander at Negaunee, were both commended by the Michigan State Police for their work on the Moilanen case, as were Gayle Lampinen and Lee Anne Wysocki for their cooperation.
Ball also received another award, this one from the Casselmans. At one point in the proceedings, the attorney had inadvertently referred to the detective as Dr. Ball. When the Casselmans went to one of Dr. Werner Spitzs seminars on investigative pathology, they obtained an updated copy of his book, Medical-Legal Investigation of Death , and had Spitz autograph it.
To Dr. Ball...
