A Brutal Murder
The upscale suburb of Wellesley, Massachusetts hadnt seen a murder in 30 years. Then came Halloween, 1999. That brisk morning, Dr. Dirk Greineder, 60, and his wife of 32 years, Mabel, took one of their dogs for a walk in Morses Pond park. A short time later, Dr. Greineder led police to the corpse of his wife. Shed been bludgeoned, stabbed and her throat slashed. Her husband claimed an unknown assailant had committed the act--possibly the same person responsible for two unsolved murders in nearby towns.
A Double Life
Dirk Greineder was a well-respected allergist whose home was valued at half a million dollars. He and Mabel had raised three children, who had all attended Yale, like their father. But the good doctor also indulged in a secret life involving phone sex, Internet porn, and motel trysts with prostitutes.
A Family Destroyed
A dogged investigation finally yielded enough evidence to lead to...

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I wish to thank several people for helping me get the information necessary to write this book. First, Wellesley Police Chief Terrence Cunningham, who agreed to sit down with me and go over the Greineder case in detail; second, the employees of the Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham, Massachusetts, especially court clerk Michael Hulak, who allowed me unfettered access to the entire court file; and finally court reporters Peggy Morris and Dawna Chapin, who graciously took time from their very busy schedules to print out the voluminous trial transcript for me. Id also like to thank my agent, Janet Benrey, of the Hartline Literary Agency, and Miles Lott, my editor at Kensington Books, for all their hard work on my behalf.

Epilogue
Dirk Greineder is currently serving his life sentence in the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts. As of this writing, he is asking the states supreme judicial court for a new trial, because he contends Judge Paul Chernoff violated his rights by allowing the jury to hear evidence about his secret life of prostitutes and pornography. Greineder is also challenging blood spatter, DNA, and other forensic evidence used to convict him. If a new trial is not granted, Greineder will appeal his conviction to the states appeals court.
On Wednesday, November 14, 2001, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine revoked the license of Dr. Dirk K. Greineder, who had been licensed to practice medicine in the state since 1976. Also in November 2001, Greineder voluntarily agreed to give up control of his wifes assets. A month earlier, Mays sister, Ilse, had petitioned the Norfolk Probate and Family Court to remove Greineder as the executor of his wifes estate. Because of a loophole in Massachusetts law, which has since been closed, Greineder would have been able to manage his wifes estate, even though he had been convicted of her murder.
Former state senator Cheryl Jacques was the lead sponsor of a bill signed into law that now prevents a person charged with homicide from inheriting property, money, or assets from his or her victims estate pending the outcome of a criminal trial. The law also prevents a murder victims estate from being controlled by the person who has been found guilty in that persons death. The legislation was prompted by Greineders case.
