The youngest surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach, John Christian (born Johann, he adopted the English form of his name in maturity) represents a unique link between the baroque and classical worlds. His early musical training was with his father but his own musical preferences led him to Italy and study with Padre Martini. He abandoned the Lutheranism of his youth, becoming a Roman Catholic and composing much sacred music as organist of Milan Cathedral. He became Mozarts friend and mentor, having met him when the child prodigy visited London in 1764. During his lifetime he was the most successful of the musical Bachs, although he died deeply in debt, and until quite recent years his music has been largely ignored. This impeccably researched biography of the man and his times is evidence that his true stature is now being recognized. HARDCOVER.

Preface
Less than a decade after Johann Sebastian Bach's death, when people talked about "the famous Bach," they did not mean the cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig; he had been virtually forgotten by then. Most likely they were referring to Johann Christian Bach, Sebastian's youngest son. Yet historians have paid far less attention to Johann Christian (later widely known as John Christian) than to his half brothers Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel or to his brother Johann Christoph Friedrich, the "Bckeburg Bach." I shall soon try to establish the reasons for this neglect.
While there have been some specialized studies by German scholars, it is primarily non-German authors who deserve the credit for having rediscovered the youngest Bach son and for having reestablished his rightful stature. Thanks are especially due to Charles Sanford Terry, whose biography, published in 1923, was revised in 1967 and supplemented with a detailed preface and numerous corrections by H. C. Robbins Landon.
