PREFACE
It has been more than twenty-five years since I wrote Tom Northway, a story based on the life of my grandfather, and a number of years since I thought of developing the chronicle of the Northways into a series. The present volume is the third in the series.
The chronicle is an old form that from the beginning has changed along the way from annal to interpretation. I call this whole a "chronicle" because it has to do with the moral history of my time, not that my fictional characters are meant to be exempla in the old sense of a race or nation. They are, as creations, people I do know in some form or other, studies in the American character in various eras, while being also, I hope, real human individuals on the page. They are not great or noble in any way, but they seek to love and understand, and their lives seem to me to point to something proud and painful in the real lives of those I have been close to in this nation in my time. The characters in this chronicle belong to a time past, though some operate in present time; but that quickly becomes past. The genealogical and chronological record of a family here is as much a fictionone the author relishesas it is a look at the labyrinth of meshed families and characters within them that has been my lot to observe.

The parts of this work, as the present one, are akin to novels. They have much the same shape and dynamic as the novel, yet they also are like the old "whitened board" or "album" of the chronicler: each an impressionistic album in which the characters come and go and may or may not appear again and in which the character telling is also telling in course his own human history.
Our America, the United States, growing so excitingly diverse now, has always been an overtly idealistic nation which honors the ideal in its subversion. We have believed that the impossible and improbable are possible, and sometimes have been able to prove it as individuals, or together. More often, as small figures in the mosaic, we stumble individually over paradoxes in the national "character" that would have tripped a mythical hero. So with my Mark and Marcus, Tom and Ida, Louise and Clara and Remember, and "Bo" who tries to tell it.
And so again I quote Robert Lowell's "Epilogue," which comes so close to my intention in the Northway chronicle.
Yet why not say what happened? Pray the grace of accuracy Vermeer gave to the sun's illumination stealing like the tide across a map to his girl solid with yearning. We are poor passing facts, warned by that to give each figure in the photograph his living name.
My appreciation to Dean James F. Jones, Jr., Dedman College, Southern Methodist University, for his encouragement of the Northway chronicle, and to Jill Bagwell of the SMU English Department for her keen editorial eye.

This novel is dedicated to the memories of Wallace Stegner and A. Kenneth Pye, each tough-minded and of rare faith, wit, grace and courage.
