Preface
It was a great pleasure to have been invited to edit Conrad's Heart of Darkness. It is to me the most absorbing of Conrad's worksand I am clearly not alone in that judgement. Professor David Leon Higdon, the editor of Conradiana, stated in 1990 that twenty-five percent of the submissions for his journal focus on this novella. It has captivated the general reader, too; it is perhaps the twentieth-century literature classic most commonly readand enjoyed. Chinua Achebe is probably right that it is "the most commonly prescribed novel in twentieth-century literature classes" and, in my experience, students are fascinated by it. To cap it all, the tale was a favourite of Conrad; he called it "my pet Heart of Darkness," in his letter of 3 December 1902 to Elsie Hueffer. It seems to me that it expresses the essence of Conrad.
I wish to thank Dr. Marcus Milton, Deputy Director of the British Council, Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, for grants which enabled me to research this edition in The British Library, London, and the Library of the Joseph Conrad Society (U.K.); Professor David Leon Higdon for advice regarding the choice of text; and my wife, Chinchi, whose cooperation is indispensable in all my academic endeavoursand it is always readily given.
