In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

Sarajevo,Bosnia, June 28. (By courtesy of the Vienna Neue Freie Presse.)ArchdukeFrancis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife, theDuchess of Hohenberg, were shot and killed by a Bosnian student here today. Thefatal shooting was the second attempt upon the lives of the couple during theday, and is believed to have been the result of a political conspiracy.

Thismorning, as Archduke Francis Ferdinand and the Duchess were driving to areception at the Town Hall a bomb was thrown at their motor car. The Archdukepushed it off with his arm.

The bombdid not explode until after the Archdukes car had passed on, and the occupantsof the next car, Count von Boos-Waldeck and Col. Morizzi, the Archdukes aidede camp, were slightly injured. Among the spectators, six persons were more orless seriously hurt.

The authorof the attempt at assassination was a compositor named Gabrinovics, who comesfrom Trebinje.

After theattempt upon his life the Archduke ordered his car to halt, and after he foundout what had happened he drove to the Town Hall, where the Town Councillors, with the Mayor at their head, awaited him. The Mayor was about to begin hisaddress of welcome, when the Archduke interrupted him angrily, saying:

Herr Brgermeister,it is perfectly outrageous! We have come to Sarajevo on a visit and have had abomb thrown at us.

TheArchduke paused a moment, then said: Now you may go on.

Thereuponthe Mayor delivered his address and the Archduke made a suitable reply.

The publicby this time had heard of the bomb attempt, and burst into the hall with loudcries of Zivio! the Slav word for hurrah.
