Foreword
BY Red Fisher
On most nights, he would skate out of his own end with those powerful, giant strides ... beyond one man, then another... and by now, there was no longer a roar in the arena, but a noise engulfing it. Frank Mahovlich, the Big M, was in full flight, and there was no finer sight anywhere in hockey.
I was there to watch him from the start of his Original Six years whenever the Canadiens traveled to the Gardens in Toronto or the Maple Leafs visited the Forum in Montreal. I didn't see him quite as often during the 198 regular-season games he played with the Detroit Red Wings, but then there he was, wearing the Canadiens sweater for three full seasons and part of a fourth, and playing on top of his game, as Canadiens management hoped and expected he would.
The Mahovlich NHL legend was born and grew in Toronto, where he enjoyed his greatest years and overcame terrible adversity, but he was apprecated in Montreal long before he was acquired by that organization from the Red Wings. "I'd love to get that Mahovlich," Canadiens general manager Sam Pollock told me on several occasions. "Those people in Toronto are always complaining about him, but I know I can do something with him."
Some of those peoplestarting with Maple Leafs coach Punch Imlachwould tell you that Frank Mahovlich could have done better than the Hockey Hall of Fame numbers he eventually put on the board. Imlach often suggested there wasn't enough fire in his belly. He would tell me: "I'd give a hundred bucks to anyone who can wake him up."

The record books show that the six-foot, 205-pound Frank Mahovlich I knew, admired and enjoyed on and off the ice hardly ever could be described as a sleeping giant. Eighteen NHL seasons; four Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs and two with the Canadiens; 533 goals and 570 assists in 1,181 games represent eye-snapping productivity for someone who spent most of his NHL years in a six-team league. He was not the best player I have ever seenBobby Orr wasbut he surely was among the best.
He was special. He was one of a kind. He still is.
Bobby Hull once said: "Frank Mahovlich was likely the greatest junior player I ever saw. I was always so amazed at the kind of maturity he had at such a young age. On a given night, Frank Mahovlich was the greatest player that ever played. He was like that in junior, and he was like that in pro."
Is there a better labor of love than a son writing about his father, as Ted Mahovlich has done? I don't think so. He has been able to capture his great moments, listen to the marvelous stories only hockey players can spin during a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play with his father in old-timers' games across Canada, and describe the demons he overcame. It is a story of pride, of family, of caring and of accomplishment.
One of my favorite stories about Senator Mahovlich goes back to the 1973-74 season. He had scored 31 goals and 49 assists that year, but there were recurring reports that he had decided to join the upstart World Hockey Association. "What's this about you going to the Toronto Toros next season?" I asked him on the charter carrying the Canadiens to one of their few remaining playoff games.
"Aw, gee," said Frank, "I don't want to talk about anything like that. Right now, my focus is on the playoffs. I'll promise you one thing, thoughI'll keep you informed.
Mahovlich was as good as his word.
The telephone rang in my home on a Saturday morning several days after the Canadiens had been eliminated from the playoffs.
"It's Frank, Red."
"Yeah, Frank, what's up?"

"Remember I told you I'd keep you informed once the season was over?"
"So?"
"I just want to tell you I'm going out to play some tennis!"
