For 365 days, the Kansas City Royals have lived with the specter of the 2014 World Series hanging over their heads.

Game Seven. At home. Bottom of the ninth. Madison Bumgarner on the mound and Royals star Alex Gordon 90-feet away on third base, representing the tying run. And as dramatic as that all sounds, it really does no justice to the remarkable, record setting journey the Royals traveled through the 2014 season, a thrilling victory in the Wild Card game, and the playoffs in order to reach that moment for the first time in three decades no less.

Any fan knows how it ended. With Gordon s feet planted firmly on third base as Salvador Perez, the team s All-Star catcher, faced Bumgarner the seemingly invincible left-hander of the San Francisco Giants and popped out to end the game, the series, and the hopes of the 40,000 fans in attendance.

But 2015 was a new year, and a new opportunity. And these weren t the same Kansas City Royals as before; the underdog catching everyone by surprise with their resilience and tenacity. These Royals expected to win, which they did.

Big time.

Cruising to their first division title in 30 years, the 2015 Royals proved their mettle in the post-season time and time again, setting records for comeback victories and proving the old adage that, indeed, it s never over until it s over.

Now, fans have a new opportunity to share every moment of the 2014 and 2015 seasons through the eyes of the players, coaches, scouts, and front office staff who made them happen.

From the Guys Who Were There: The Kansas City Royals takes you inside the clubhouse and onto the field, as the Royals recount the moments that mean the most to them.

If you are a Royals fan, this is a must-have for your sports library.

As an added bonus, the players who helped the Royals become a powerhouse from 1976 through 1985 discuss the secret to their massive success and share how special it was to follow their younger brethren last year.

It was funny, the other day I was sitting in the stands in the Rogers Centre (in Toronto) and the Blue Jays are beating us and (about to force) a Game 6 back in Kansas City and Im thinking to myself, What if they do the same thing to us that we did to them in 1985?

George Brett
Major League Baseball Hall of Fame
Royals Hall of Fame
Kansas City Royals Vice President

When youre playing, every game is so important. But you have to take time to enjoy it, savor every moment. And thats what I like about this Royals team. They are enjoying every moment and sharing the experience with their fans.

Buddy Biancalana
Kansas City Royals shortstop, 1982-1987
World Series champion

Does life get any better than this? No. It doesnt get any better than winning a World Series, it really doesnt. Now, the rest of the guys on this years team get to experience that feeling.

Frank White
Kansas City Royals second baseman, 1973-1990
Royals Hall of Fame
Five-time All-Star
Eight-time Gold Glove Award winner

I mean, were a tight-knit group here. We all get along. I know we always say we have good chemistry. But we really do. Were all pulling for each other. We all get along off the field. And sometimes thats not always the case. Ive been on teams where some guys dont get along with other people. Over the past few years that has changed. Maybe its the leadership in here, the guys Daytons brought in here; but everyone gets along really well. Everyones fighting for the same thing, and thats winning games every day.

Alex Gordon
Kansas City Royals left fielder
Three-time All-Star
Four-time Gold Glove Award winner

I think we never panic, and the reason why we are so laid back it seems like to everybody, is because we are believers that this group of guys in here can, over the course of 162 games, be elite.

Eric Hosmer
Kansas City Royals first baseman
Three-time Gold Glove Award winner

Being around here for the last six years, we feel comfortable you know. We feel like a family here. And you know, the best thing I can do on the team, I like to do, is make my teammates happy. You know, be happy. Enjoy the game. Play hard. But have fun, too. Its a game, you know?

Salvador Perez
Kansas City Royals catcher
Three-time All-Star
2015 World Series MVP
Three-time Gold Glove Award winner

The parade our fans gave us the greatest gift they could give us and that is this turnout and a lifelong memory. I want to come back (and manage next year). I love being here and I feel like we are in a position where we can keep on winning.

Ned Yost
Kansas City Royals manager

Theres not a bad dude in this clubhouse. We just pull for each other. Were like brothers on a Little League team. Youre playing for a whole lot, but youre playing for each other more than youre playing for yourself and I think thats the biggest part of why we have done so well.

Danny Duffy
Kansas City Royals pitcher

Like many men, showing emotions isnt a strong suit of mine, but as I got home that night of the (2014) Wild Card game I tried take in all that happened. I just kept playing back the night and couldnt believe it I actually started to cry.

Cody Thorn
Lifelong Royals Fan

This book is dedicated to Royals fans everywhere. Weve waited a long time to see the crown of Major League Baseball returned home. And now the rest of the world knows what weve known all along:

Kansas City isnt just the City of Fountains. Its the City of Champions.

Bill Althaus

I wasnt surprised.

By now, dont we all pretty much expect perfection from Wade Davis? The guy has had two essentially flawless seasons out of the Kansas City bullpen. When he comes in, its pretty much a done deal. So when he blew the final pitch of the 2015 season past the Mets Wilmer Flores, sure it was big. It was huge. Everyone knows the story, that for the first time in three decades the Royals were World Series champions.

It just wasnt surprising, thats all. It wasnt a shock, and for more reasons than the fact that Wade Davis was on the mound.

I dont think its uncommon to take a minute to reflect during moments such as that, and my thoughts couldnt help but drift to last year, when they came up 90-feet short of tying Game 7 of the World Series. That became motivation for 2015. You can go back to Spring Training, which doesnt mean anything its just preparation for the season but that was the mindset. This team set out from the very first pitch of Spring Training with the image of Alex Gordon standing on third base burned into their brains. They were betting they were 90-feet better than last year. And they were right.

I think one of the silliest things people do and I understand why they do it, because I do it, too is read pre-season magazines and all their predictions. Number one, who is going to be hurt, and for how long? What if its one of your best players? Thats impossible to predict. Who predicted Alex Gordon would be out for six weeks? Nobody. How good are the teams in the division going to be? Are they going to be better, worse, or the same? There are so many things that factor in.
