Chapter One Let's Talk about Something Else
Nomar Garciaparra had just hit safely in his 24th consecutive game. When it was over, he had gone through his normal post-game ritual, which consists of eating a big meal as the members of the press wait to talk to him. They waited. And they waited.
Finally, almost 40 minutes after the game, after he had finished the long routine that makes up his day, Nomar was finally ready to talksort of.
"Same rules apply," Nomar said before anyone could ask him a question.

Same rules apply means? "We don't talk about stats or anything," Nomar said.
That made it a bit difficult for those gathered in front of his Fenway Park locker late on that July night in 1997.
No stats? It's not like guys hit in 24 consecutive games all the time. Nomar had hit in 30 in a row during his rookie season, an American League record for rookies (one of many records he set in that special year). He was making another run at a 30-game hitting streak. If he reached that total, he would become the first player ever to have 30-game hitting streaks in two consecutive seasonsand only the third player ever to have two 30-gamers at all.
Also ahead of Nomar on that night was another shot at breaking Dom DiMaggio's Red Sox record of hitting in 34 straight.
Can't talk about it, though. This kid with the very unusual first name (it's his father's name,

Ramon, spelled backwards) is not about his stats. More so, he's a very superstitious young mana serious creature of habit who is not about to do anything that he thinks would jinx him.
When one reporter tried to take a different approach and asked him about the consistency needed for such a hitting streak, Nomar said, "I don't think about it.
"I'm going out there trying to help the team win, trying to get on base, trying to drive people in."
The writers and radio/TV reporters left feeling they had just come up empty. Nothing unusualthis special player really doesn't like talking about himself or what he's done.
He really just wants to go out and play baseball. He loves itevery minute of it. During a game, you can see him smiling, talking to his teammates and others on the field, like a kid in a candy store.
Page 6
He is just thrilled to be out there playing baseball. Heck, he might even like it more than playing soccer, something else Anthony Nomar Garciaparra loves.

Chapter Two A Special Kind of Kid
Even back in college, at Georgia Tech, it was easy to tell Nomar had a competitive drive second to no one. ''We were at Wichita State for the (NCAA) regionals and we had to play twice on the championship day," former Tech coach Danny Hall told the
